SACKETT — Gary W. Sackett, 69, of Swedesboro. His friends will miss his book critiques on Facebook. Gary was a voracious reader and shared what he gleaned with everyone. Since becoming ill, his Kindle was his constant companion.

In February 1991 he met Sandy Lewis but it wasn’t until Labor Day 2013 that they became Mr. and Mrs. It was a momentous day for both of them.

GLASSBROOK — Phyllis M. Glassbrook, 98. She wouldn’t leave her home until her appearance was just right: hair, clothes, jewelry. Phyllis was the picture of a lady. She was a true homemaker. Not only did she cook, bake and knit, she also painted her house and mowed the lawn.

She and her late husband, Clarence, settled in many different places for his work. When they were first married they were in Rhode Island, then they moved to California where they raised their daughter, then relocated to Baton Rouge, La. One thing they all had in common is they were great venues for boating. Of course she always had a little Annie Oakley in her. In Louisiana she would target shoot in the Bayou and was known to level her .45 at a few alligators. When they retired they settled in the Swedesboro area.

In 1983 Phyllis, after the death of her dear husband, took residence in Friends Village in Woodstown where she delighted in spoiling the other residents with her baking. Holidays weren’t complete until she had just the right cakes or cupcakes. When she was in her 90’s Phyllis commented that “my friends will think I didn’t make it” (referring to Heaven) since so many were already there.

Her survivors include a daughter, Barbara and her husband Anthony Casella, two grandsons: John and Anthony and four great grandchildren.

Joy was born to the late James Elmo and Meda Ford and raised in Callao, Missouri on a dairy farm and had lived in Clarksboro since 1953. Joy lived from coast to coast before Ervin, the love of her life, finally convinced her to marry him. On her last visit to New Jersey she told him it was now or never while standing on the steps of the train. Joy told him she wasn’t getting off unless they got married. In a week, they planned their wedding and tied the knot that lasted for 33 wonderful years. Joy loved to talk about those happy times and had the sweetest little smile when she would be reminded of them, saying that she played hard to get.

Joy was a “Band Mom” with the Kingsway Marching Band during the 1970’s and 80’s, always having anything the members needed, even car rides for those that couldn’t get to the school. She was a past member of Zion U.M. Church where she led the Cherub Choir for over 20 years, and a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Joy Circle Ladies group.

Joy treasured taking care of her grandchildren, spending hours of quality time playing board games and attending many of their sporting events. She liked to attend yard sales, and visiting her family on annual trips to Missouri before she became ill with Parkinson’s. In her later years, Joy enjoyed watching the game show network with Wheel of Fortune being her favorite show.

She also helped form the Swedesboro Woolwich Historical Society and enjoyed her time with the Mickleton Garden Club.

She graduated from Ursinus College in 1948 with a degree in chemistry. DuPont Co. employed her until her fourth child was born and babysitters were hard to find. Wanting to do more, Elaine went back to school at Glassboro State Teachers College and received another degree in Remedial Reading and taught part time until 1974. Somehow during that period she found the time to help out at Rode’s Roost. She introduced an upscale catering menu by adding Hors d’oeuvres.

The Salutatorian and Best Female Athlete of Swedesboro High class of ‘44 happened to marry the Best Male Athlete of the class of ‘44, the late Earl Jr. They’d marry and settle on Rode Lane.
