chalk webMULLICA HILL — Friends School Mullica Hill honored International Day of Peace on Thursday, Sept. 21, with a school-wide chalking event. Students at the pre-kindergarten through 8th grade school filled the campus sidewalks with colorful messages and drawings about peace, love and hope.

In 1981, the United Nations passed a resolution establishing that International Day of Peace “be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.” As a Quaker school rooted in an historic association with peace movements, Friends School celebrates this event every year with an activity involving the whole school.

The day began with a speech on the importance of global unity by Interim Head of School Matthew Bradley. Then a moment of silence was observed around the school’s Peace Pole followed by the whole school singing “Peace Will Come” led by music teacher Kate Hayden on guitar. Students were then free to spend the morning chalking the sidewalks and chatting. Faculty, staff and visitors also contributed their own drawings and messages, such as peace signs and affirmations.
