BLOOD DRIVES TO SUPPORT LIVER AWARENESS MONTH

blood drive webLOGAN TWP. — During Liver Awareness Month this October, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood and platelets to support liver transplant patients and others needing blood products.

Liver transplants are the second most common type of transplant with more than 6,000 performed in the U.S. each year, according to the American Liver Foundation. Liver transplant patients may require in excess of 30 pints of blood during surgery.

Upcoming blood donation opportunities in Logan Township will take place on Oct. 5 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Acme Markets Pharmacy, 1619 Center Square Road; and on Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Cargill Food Distribution, 1145 Commerce Boulevard.

To donate blood, simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
