GARDINER – Joseph W. Gardiner, 87, a lifelong resident of South Harrison Township passed away at home with his family at his side on Feb. 6. He was the oldest son of the late Willard and Mabel (Layton) Gardiner.

DOUGHERTY – Francis (Frank) J. Dougherty, age 82 of Mulberry, FL and formerly of Woolwich Township passed away Feb. 16 at LRMC in Mulberry , FL. Born in Philadelphia, he worked for Goodyear Tire as a Regional manager and was a Marine veteran of the Korean War. Frank moved to Florida 20 years ago from New Jersey, was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish and the VFW Post #13, Gibbstown. He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Katherine M. ‘Cass’ Dougherty and his brother Joe Dougherty. Frank is survived by his son Frank, daughters Trish Dougherty and Christine Downs, five grandchildren and a sister, Bernadette Mollo.

SAWYER – Charles David Sawyer, 75, died Feb. 20 following a long illness with Alzheimer’s.

Preceded in death by his wife of 33 years Honey (Tulina) Sawyer, he leaves his son Jeffrey Sawyer (Yohanna), daughter Sharon Cherry (Kevin), grandchildren Alexandra and Andrew Sawyer of New Jersey, India Honey and Jessen James Shogo Cherry of Kill Devil Hills, NC, brothers Ira Sawyer and Elzie Richard (Shirley) Sawyer of Vancouver, WA, sister Betty (Jack) Huskey of Mosier, Oregon, and sister Mary (Harold) Mitchell of Ava, Missouri.

Born on Sept. 4, 1937 to Houston and Helen Leona Sawyer in Ventura, CA, Chuck spent most of his childhood being raised in the area of Snowden, WA, not far from the banks of the great Columbia River. After attending the Mount Brook School in Snowden, he entered the US Navy where he traveled extensively throughout the world. After spending time at naval stations in both Norfolk, VA and Philadelphia, he met his wife Honey Tulina and they were married in Philadelphia on April 5, 1958.

Eventually settling in the town of Sewell, Chuck and Honey raised their 3 children and often served as coaches or helped with their 3 children’s school and athletic activities. Chuck would often fly out to Florida on business in the morning, and return before 6 p.m. the same day just in time to line the baseball fields in Sewell.

While taking classes through the University of Washington, and University of Pennsylvania, he was able to develop a number of fabrication manufacturing clients and eventually was awarded contracts with The US Department of Defense, various energy producing clients such as Raytheon, General Electric and Foster Wheeler Energy. At the height of his career, he employed over 100 people between his two manufacturing operations in Chester, PA and Canton, OH.

In the early 1990’s Chuck began to spend considerable time in the Washington DC area and became active in supporting conservative causes he believed in and working closely with Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (KS) and Senator Don Nichols (OK). He also became a founding member of the Ronald Wilson Reagan Republican Center in Washington, DC.

Chuck was also an advocate and supported extensively the Ambassador International Cultural Foundation culminating in the building of the Ambassador Auditorium, a world renowned concert venue in Southern California. The building is still known today as the Carnegie Hall of the west. He also strongly supported Ambassador University in both Texas and California where his children we able to attend and participate in collegiate athletics.

His greatest loves in life however, was the time spent with his wife Honey, his 3 children and grandchildren both in New Jersey and the Outer Banks, NC and his family reunions spent with his brothers and sister in the great Pacific Northwest.

POBANZ – Ernest W. Pobanz U.S. Veteran Ernest W. Pobanz, 88, of Repaupo, passed away peacefully at his sister’s home, Feb 23. He is the beloved brother of Janice Pepino, Emerson (Lorraine) Pobanz, Darlene (Joe) Morina, uncle of 11 nieces and nephews and 5 great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his siblings Glenn, Vernon, Pearl, and girlfriend Betty Carey.

Ernest lived and farmed in Repaupo his whole life and was a WWII Navy Veteran.

MAXIE – James Earl Maxie, age 78, of Mt. Royal, died Feb. 25.

Mr. Maxie was born in Jonesville, VA and had been a resident of East Greenwich Township since 1959. He served in the Army during the Korean War, was retired after working 40 years for Otto C. Rode, and was an avid NASCAR fan.

Husband of the late Marion, he is survived by two sons, Jeffrey and his wife Marlene, Richard and his wife Carla, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and one sister Betty Drury. Mr. Maxie was also predeceased by a son, Bruce, and siblings John, Hugh, Raymond, Boyd, Jule, and Geraldine.

HUNT – J. Howard Hunt, 79, of Woodstown, formerly of Mullica Hill went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 25. J. Howard was born on Oct. 31, 1933 to J. Howard Hunt and Lavina Goldy Hunt in Woodbury.

He graduated from Woodbury High School in 1952 and then attended Western Maryland College on a full football and ROTC scholarship and graduated with a Business Administration and Economics Degree. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant upon graduation from Western Maryland and served in the US army as a Guided Missile Instructor. He left the army to pursue a future in education but remained in the Army Reserve and served as Captain of Company D 50th Armored Division in the NJ National Guard. Teacher certification courses were taken at Rutgers, St. Joseph College, and Temple University. He earned his Master’s Degree in Elementary Supervision and Administration from Glassboro State College in 1961, and later fulfilled a lifelong goal when he received his Educational Doctorate in 1981 from Nova Southeastern University in Educational Leadership.  He has been a distinguished educator starting as a teacher, principal and administrator of Alloway Township Schools, Vice Principal Clearview Regional High School, Superintendent of Schools for Winslow Township, Winchendon Township, Monroe Township, and Upper Pittsgrove Township. He served over 10 years as Salem County Superintendent of Schools and was instrumental in the formation of Salem County Vocational Technical School and NJ Regional Day School. He finished his career as a Site Coordinator for Nova Southeastern University helping others achieve their Doctorate Degrees.

J. Howard Hunt was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara Jean Hunt in 2008. He is dearly loved and survived by his children, J. Howard Hunt III and wife Mary of Duxbury, MA and daughters Nancy Jean Barrall and husband Charles of Mays Landing, Lynne Alison Woltman and husband Richard of Hummelstown, PA, and Gwendolyn Blair Danner and husband Mark of Duluth, GA. He was a loving grandfather to 18 grandchildren. His brother William Hunt of Elmer, and sister Dorothy Kern and husband George of Woodbury, and his beloved friend Ruth Crane also survive him.

BENNETT – Herbert E. Bennett, 91, of Mullica Hill, died on March 1. He served in the US Army during World War II. He retired from the NJ Turnpike Authority.

Predeceased by his wife Doris D. (nee Duffield) and daughter Charlene. Survived by his daughter Marion Gaffney, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Services were held in Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro.
 

CUTRUFELLO – Mary Rose Cutrufello (nee Ferrara), 83, of Clarksboro, passed away March 2 at home, with her family by her side. She is the beloved mother of Nora Grasso, Mary and Annette Cutrufello, Paul D., David and Robert Cutrufello, sister of Anthony Ferrara, also survived by 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Predeceased by her husband Paul A. Cutrufello.

DEITRICK – Rudolph Deitrick Jr., of Clarksboro died on March 2, age 85.

A driven, hardworking man, Rudolph served in the Navy during WWII and Korean wars. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked in bakeries, and then purchased Mikays in Clayton where he ran that business for many years. Rudolph was a private person, but enjoyed Scouts, the outdoors, and horses…which he owned.

Beloved father of Charles (Carol), Debra (the late Barry) Wilson, Sarah (Charles) Kurtsinger, David (Michelle) Deitrick; Rudolph IV, and the late Rudolph III. Grandfather of Crystal (Frank) Guarino, Sandy Van Toorn Coleman (Travis), Charles (Heidi), Eric, Ralph (Michelle) Himes, Debra (Steve) Clark, Florence (John) Baker, Kimberly (William) Cook, Laura Edwards, Rachel Kurtsinger, Devin, Carlina Deitrick, Johnathon (Lindsay), and Gabriel, dear brother of Ruby A. MUNICELLO – Raymond R. Municello died on March 3, of Mickleton. Age 72. Beloved husband of Dolores (nee DePasquale) and devoted father to Sharon Municello-Baker (Justin). Loving godfather to Chris Giordano. He is also survived by many loving family and friends.

Ray served in the National Guard from 1963 to 1969 and his highest rank was sergeant. He retired from DuPont as a supervisor after 32 years of dedicated service. He worked as a crossing guard for the township of East Greenwich. He loved this job, walking the kids to safety.

Ray was really into self-improvement and voraciously read books on the history of the United States and the evolution of mankind from dinosaur to Neanderthals to humans. He loved being outdoors and taking vacations with his wife, daughter and son-in-law.

Ray was an avid reader and liked to collect western and sci-fi-movies. He even attended the Star Trek convention with his daughter and wife.

LUCCARELLA – Rita Luccarella, age 89, formerly of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully March 7 at Pitman Manor, Pitman. Born in Philadelphia, Rita had lived in Bridgeport for over 60 years before taking up residence at Pitman Manor. She had been a hair dresser for 40 years and had worked at a salon in Woodbury for 30 years. She was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, attending St. Michael’s Church in Gibbstown and a member of the Logan Township Senior Citizens.

She was the devoted wife of the late Russell Luccarella who passed away in 2006.

Rita is survived by her children, Pauline Bond and her husband Steve, Jerry and Marie Luccarella and John and Connie Luccarella. Four grandchildren, Matthew, Jessica, Nicholas and April and great-grandchildren Madison and Odin. A sister, Mary Schubert and brother, Edward Caruso Sr.

RIVELL – Anna Elizabeth Rivell (nee Palmer), age 94 years, of Clarksboro now calls heaven her home.

Anna passed away on March 8 at Shady Lane Nursing Home where she had been a resident for four years. Anna was born in Gibbstown, the daughter of the late Dison A. and Anna E. Palmer. She worked as a bookkeeper at Abbott’s Hardware, Glassboro until she retired at age 70. Anna was a member of the Billingsport United Methodist Church, Paulsboro and a Past Grand Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Swedesboro Chapter #115 and her husband was her Past Grand Patron.

She was the widow of the late Elmer Aden Rivell who died on Feb. 26, 2003 after 68 years of marriage. Anna loved her family and family dinners. She also loved animals and especially horses.

She is survived by her daughters, Bonnie and Frank Wertz of Mickleton, Shirley and Jerry Thomas of Pittsgrove, Nita and Glenn Erickson of Cave Creek, Arizona; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Anna was predeceased by her grandchildren Kyle Erickson in 2010 and Patricia Eastlack Plucinski in 2013.

CARBONE – Michele M. Carbone, age 63 of Mullica Hill, died March 16. Born in Woodbury, she had been a resident of Mantua Township all of her life. Michele was an avid book reader and retired last year from Rowan University. Daughter of the late Marion and Augustine Carbone, she is survived by one brother John P. Carbone, two sisters Karen Quigley, Eileen Curl and her husband Tom, 8 nieces and nephews, 14 great nieces and nephews.

TYSON –On March 19, Wilbert Woodrow Tyson, 74, departed this life peacefully at his home in Mullica Hill after a long and courageous illness.

Wilbert was a veteran of the US Navy and retired from General Motors Assembly Plant Wilmington as a Final Line Inspector July 1997 after 34 years of employment.

He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters: Annette Allen of Mantua, Wanda (Dwight) Richardson of Williamstown; his siblings Clara (Kenard) Lloyd, Betty Davidson, Charles (Carolyn) and David all of Mullica Hill; a sister-in-law Bobbi Tyson of Swedesboro; granddaughters Amaiya and Lisa; god daughters Dawn and Denise; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents John and Mae Frances Tyson and siblings: Leroy, John Jr. and Walter.
