Free Flu Clinics for Residents – Get Your Flu Shot Early in the Season

WOODBURY — Robert Damminger and Freeholder Lyman Barnes have a clear message for residents.  Get your shot.

Gloucester County Freeholders have again scheduled 36 open influenza clinics to keep residents healthy this flu season.  The county-run clinics begin on Oct. 2.

Clinics are scheduled in every community, with 11 held during the evenings and four on Saturdays so that busy families can take advantage of this free program. There are no out-of-pocket costs for a flu shot from the county.

The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccination for everyone, starting at age 6 months, with only a few exceptions for people with rare health conditions.

Barnes said that the popular Drive-Thru clinics will be held again this year and so will Daycare/Preschool/Family clinics to accommodate those with younger children.

The vaccine viruses are chosen to maximize the likelihood that the influenza vaccine will protect against the viruses most likely to spread and cause illness among people during the upcoming flu season.

This year’s seasonal flu vaccine contains the following three viruses: Influenza type A (H1N1), Influenza type A (H3N2), and Influenza type B (Massachusetts/2/2012-like (B/Yamagata lineage) virus).

Flu shots are available to County residents only and proof of residency is required.

Drive-Thru clinics have been scheduled to accommodate those citizens that have difficulty walking or standing in lines

Complete a blank Flu Consent Form in advance to bring to a clinic of your choice, which is available online at www.gloucestercountynj.gov. Blank Flu Consent Forms will also be made available at all clinic sites. If you fill out a form on site, we encourage you to bring return address labels to the flu shot clinic to help speed up your visit.

Children and the flu shot: residents should not send a child with a family member who is not their legal guardian. Children ages 6 months-18 years must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Children under the age of 9 years receiving flu immunization for the first time need two shots. The second shot should be given one month after the first shot.

Preschool children attending a licensed day care facility must have received their flu immunization before Dec. 31 to be allowed to attend daycare in 2014. Special “Daycare/Preschool/Family” clinics have been included for this population.

Some people should check with a doctor before taking flu vaccine including persons on immunosuppressive therapy (cancer treatment or steroid therapy), and those with a fever or who have been ill with something more serious than a cold in the last 48 hours.
