RHONE – Cliff Rhone of Swedesboro, age 84, departed this life on Sept. 21. He is survived by a host of relatives and friends.

GOLD – Dolores A. Gold, age 81, wife of the late Leo Gold, passed away Sept. 24 at the home of her daughter. Born in Uniontown, Pa., she had resided in Swedesboro before moving to Ocean City. She began her working career with Owen Corning Glass Co. in Bridgeton, then to the former Tele-Dyne Plastic Plant in Swedesboro. She became a Home Health Aide for Visiting Nurse Assoc. and finally the activities director at the Howard Stainton Senior Center in Ocean City. Dolores loved hats, was a prolific writer, had a passion for the arts, loved to travel but above all, enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Diane (John) Pickering, Nancy (Alan) Greenberg, Leo (Nancy) Gold II, Cynthia Rose and Donna Jayne Adams. 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

COOK – William “Cookie” Cook, 90, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sept. 24. Born in Mt. Royal, Cookie resided in St. Augustine, FL for the past 17 years. He served in the Army Air Corps as a flight officer and earned both the American Campaign Medal and the Victory Medal. He was retired from Mobil Oil Corporation in Paulsboro, where he worked as a lab technician for 38 years.

Extremely active after retirement, Cookie spent many days on the golf course and enjoying time with his grandchildren.

Cookie is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over 60 years, Virginia; two sons, Michael (Sue) Cook and Dwight “Ike” (Danielle) Cook; three grandchildren, Mike, Courtney and Dustin; his brother Harry and several nieces and nephews.

SMITH – Kate Lee Smith (Martin) of Swedesboro, age 79, died at home surrounded by loved ones on Sept. 29. Beloved husband Isaac, devoted mother of George Martin (Alfreda), Holland Lewis Martin (Zina), Adrian Smith (Claudia), Isaac Smith Jr. (Margaret), George Smith (Diane), Lisa Scott (Jerome), sister Ruby Martin, 28 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren.

DAMASK – Roy A. Damask, age 52, of Mickleton died Oct. 2. Roy was born in Camden, raised in Gibbstown, and lived in Mickleton for the last 11 years and he worked for the Department of Transportation, Bridgeport for 19 years. Roy was a member of the Raccoon Creek Boat Club and treasured time spent with his family down the shore and on their vacations to Disneyland. He also liked to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Damask (nee Urban) of Mickleton; his children Roy and Shannon Damask, Justin, Nicole and Michelle Damask; his granddaughter, Riley Damask; his mother in law, Lola Urban; his sister in law, Brenda and Steve Caltabiano; his brothers in law, Marc Urban, Kevin Urban and Jen Swanson; his nieces and nephews, Alexis, Sophia, Nicholas and Katie. Mr. Damask was predeceased by his parents, Pericles and Shirley Damask and his father in law, Ellison Urban.

Services were held in the McBride-Foley Funeral Home, Paulsboro.

ERDIE – Dorothy Elizabeth Erdie. Dorothy originally hailed from North Jersey. She and her husband, Edward planned for living for a short time in East Greenwich to help an Aunt. But they forgot to leave. Clarksboro became their home for 60 plus years.

Her baking was top notch, especially her apple and peach pies. Dorothy was a sewer, crafter, artist, and ceramic maker and mostly used her talents for others. When a daughter married, Dorothy made the bride’s gown and the wedding party’s dresses.

In her younger years, she and her husband were active with the Mantua VFW spending afternoons playing a little pinochle and cheering the races at Garden State Track. Recent years have found her enjoying westerns and old movies with her dog Candy to keep her company. She and her UPS driver were on a first name basis: QVC kept him busy.

A young Dorothy went out on a date with a young guy from their hangout. It didn’t go particularly well but the young man’s brother asked if he could take Dorothy out. The late Edward was the match she’d always looked for. They were blessed with daughters: Phyllis Greco and Patricia Lehman. She was predeceased by an infant Stephanie. Survivors include 5 grandchildren: Bryan and Stephen Magsam, Robert and Daniel Lehman, and her favorite granddaughter, Deanna Greco, 4 great grandchildren, a sister Maryjane Ebaugh, and dear friends, Dan, Joyce, Domenick, Matthew and Jeannette.

ENGBLOM – Mary A. Engblom (nee Battaglia), age 83, of Clarksboro, died on Oct. 4.

Mary was devoted to her husband Ray and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt. She always had a smile on her face and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was generous to all who knew her with a givers heart, putting others before herself. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Beloved wife to the late Raymond A.C.; devoted mother of Donna Cope (Ernie), Jim (Karyn), Steven, Bill (Katrin), and the late Raymond; adoring grandmother of Jeremiah, Matthew, Alyssa (Corey), Steven, Vickie, John, Hannah, Krystina, and Paul; great grandmother of Audryanna; dear sister to Antoinette; loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her parents, Vincenzo and Olivia (nee Malara) Battaglia and siblings Frances, Catherine “Kitty”, Antony “Tony” and Lena “Mimi”, and son, Raymond.

LAKE – Elsie Lake. She was the consummate homemaker, Elsie’s kitchen was her office. It’s where she cooked, making her home smell of chicken soup, pot roasts and cinnamon buns, but, more importantly, it’s where she used her powerful listening skills. She was generous with her time and attention. She “collected” people throughout her life, hardly ever leaving the produce section without having made a new friend. Her dry sense of humor was always nearby. She had a love of words, her dictionary was her friend and she did crossword puzzles in ink. She was feisty till the end; figuring that 6 days of hospice was sufficient she took the 7th off for services at Bethesda Methodist Church. Elsie loved her church family.

She was the wife of the late Jenkin. As Lakes go she jokingly called him Erie, she was Superior. Their union was blessed by daughters, Judith Osborn (James) and the late Gwen Lake, and two grandchildren, Karen and Jimmy Osborn. She is survived by her sister, Elaine Theisen and was predeceased by sister Mildred Waldron and brother Bud Gindhart.

GOUSE – Walter H. Gouse age 80 years of Bridgeport died Oct. 10 in Salem Hospital. Mr. Gouse was born in Camden and lived in Bridgeport for most of his life. He retired from the City of Portsmouth, Virginia in 1998 after 11 years of service. He was a member of Kingsway Baptist Church, Mickleton, lifetime member of Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Association and an exempt member of the NJ State Firemen’s Association. He enjoyed mowing grass and doing odd jobs.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy M. Gouse (nee Spencer) of Clarksboro; his children, Walter G. Gouse of Wilkes Barre, PA, Deborah Sue Cheeseman of Carney’s Point, Scott D. Gouse of Clearwater, FL, Melissa A. Jones of Carney’s Point; his grandchildren, Wayne C. Cheeseman Jr., Jeffrey Gouse, Laura Gouse, Scott Gouse Jr., Tesa Jones, Hana Jones, Chloe Jones, Lamir Jones and his great grandchildren, Jacob Cheeseman, Caleigh Rose Gouse and Abigail Cheeseman.

CORE – Janet A. Core (nee Pieri), age 55 of Mullica Hill died Oct. 11.

Born in Philadelphia, she had been a resident of Mullica Hill for 22 years. Janet was a teacher for Harrison Township Schools. Wife of Giancarlo (John) Core, also survived by daughter Laura Core, son Nicolas Core, her parents Silvio and Anne (nee Profeta) Pieri, two brothers Gregory and Richard Pieri.

HENDRICKSON — Norma Justice Hendrickson of Glassboro, age 88, has been gently called home to be with her husband, parents, and sisters in Heaven. Norma died on Oct. 12 at Kennedy Hospital in Washington Twp. of pneumonia.

Daughter of W. Norman and Florence B. Justice, Norma was born May 29, 1925 and grew up on and around farms in Swedesboro with her three sisters and a brother. “The Justice Girls” Ruth, Betty, Dorothy and Norma, were not only sisters but good friends as well. Younger brother Bill, also close to Norma throughout her life, still resides in Clarksboro.

After graduating from Swedesboro High School in 1942, Norma attended Peirce College in Philadelphia, beginning her career working in the city as a secretary. She married Richard “Dick” Hendrickson of Paulsboro in 1952 and they started a family of two girls and a boy. Norma was a stay-at-home mother for many years, spending a great deal of time with her mother and sisters quilting, preserving foods and enjoying visits to Philadelphia to go to the theatre. She was an active member of the Swedesboro Episcopal Methodist Church from her earliest years.

Upon moving to Glassboro, Norma joined First United Methodist Church of Glassboro, where she attended faithfully and served on numerous committees. After Dick’s death in 1974, she became an administrative secretary at the First Baptist Church in Pitman. Norma worked at the church until age 80, retiring only when failing hearing made it too hard to continue.

In addition to being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Norma loved reading and doing word puzzles. She enjoyed baking cookies, baseball (Go Phillies!), the beach, and music.  In her later years, going out to dinner was a great delight. She was her grandkids’ most loyal fan at countless T-ball and soccer games and swimming and marching band competitions.

Norma is survived by three children, Merle H. Gates, Mary Ellen H. (Kevin) Malloy, and Keith A. (Peggy) Hendrickson; by her brother William (Joan) Justice; by grandchildren Michael (Jackie) Gates, Crystal (Brian) Weber, Bradley Malloy, Douglas Malloy, Trevor Fennimore, Sara Hendrickson; and by several nieces and nephews.  She was also great-grandmom of Aiden, Lisa, and Hunter.

Interment in Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro. Norma’s favorite charities were The American Heart Association and the First United Methodist Church of Glassboro, NJ.

RUDMANN – Melvin S. Rudmann, 86, of Mullica Hill, passed away on Oct. 12. Melvin was born in Westville and has resided in Mullica Hill for 25 years. He was an air brake mechanic for Conrail in Camden for 35 years, retiring in 1989. He was an antique car enthusiast. Melvin served in the US Navy during WWII.

Melvin is survived by 3 sisters, Wilma Ryan of Columbus, OH, Catherine (Donald) Chew and Mary Elizabeth (Howard) Ballinger both of Ocean View. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Donald Ryan.

HENEGHAN – James T. Heneghan, age 55 of Woolwich Township passed away Oct. 13 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, James has resided in the area for the past nine years. He was an insurance broker and a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, Swedesboro.

RICHARDSON – Dolores M. Richardson (nee Madara), age 94 years of Mickleton died Oct. 19 in her home. She was a 1936 graduate of Pitman High School and a 1940 graduate of Glassboro State Teacher’s College. After graduation Mrs. Richardson taught in Harrison Township, Clayton and East Greenwich Schools. She was a member of Pitman United Methodist Church, Little Red Schoolhouse Committee, life member of Gloucester County Historical Society and the Gloucester County Retired Educator’s Association. She enjoyed cooking and baking.

She is survived by her sisters, Barbara and Albert Hazen of Fair Play, South Carolina, Eleanor Vigh of Brandon, Mississippi; several nieces and nephews and loving caregivers. Mrs. Richardson was predeceased by her husband, Dudley Richardson.
