Upcoming Races

fitness webEvery year around Spring I offer a column listing some upcoming races for the summer/fall season. So I’m a little late. And since I’m late, I’m just going to mention a few that seem interesting, along with an annual run that is local and that I find has a lot of meaning for all Kingsway District people.

The first one is coming up REAL fast….the 6th of September…and I sure hope it hasn’t passed while you read this, especially if you are a beer fan. The Flying Fish 5K looks more like a party than a race.

Located at the brewery in Somerdale, race starts and finishes at the brewery and is part of the ‘Great American Brewery Runs race series. Free Octoberfish beer for every adult runner.

Did you know that Octoberfest is actually held in Germany in September, not October? I just thought I’d mention that.

Other offerings at this fine race include live music from 10 to 6, lawn games that include life size beer pong, food trucks and vendors, and an official beer mug for all finishers…..of the RACE not the beer….remember the 5K? Space is limited to the first 1,000 runners so if you’re interested, and this paper reaches you in time, call 610-202-9666.

The race that I think all of us Kingsway people, and others, should try to make is the Dragon 5K run in Swedesboro on Sept. 27. This race benefits a scholarship fund founded in the name of a Kingsway student who we lost suddenly several years ago and who will never be forgotten. It is also part of what starts the rest of a day filled with more activity throughout the quaint boro.

Here’s a real interesting one on Oct. 5…. ‘10 mile Cow Run’. Set to go off at 9 a.m. at Cowtown, this race takes runners through mostly rural flat scenic farmland terrain and finishes in the lovely city of Salem.

When they say ‘mostly’ flat, get ready for some hills. And get this direct quote from the ad…”cows at the starting line”. I’m assuming they won’t be joining us for the run. Most runners will get a free ‘cow’ shirt and if you are 21 or older, enjoy the beer garden offered at the end. If interested, call 856-935-8800.

On Oct. 11 at the Parx Casino and Racetrack, the third annual Octoberfest 5K and fun mile takes off at 10 a.m. Runners get to finish up running down the same track that was home to 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness champ, Triple Crown contender ‘Smart Jones’.

Your friends and family get to watch you run live on TV screens set up all around the picnic grove as well as on giant size screens located on front of building and in the infield. Goody bags for runners and cash prizes for winners, and yes more BEER.

This race benefits both breast and prostate health. If interested, call 267-223-3149.

Considering that we were huge Smarty Jones fans with two framed pictures of each of his wins, one of them signed…..no not the horse, the Jockey Stewart Elliott, it may be hard to stay away from this one. The race and the beer.
