March is Tire Amnesty Month in Gloucester County

magick-25752xHnN0bPmaatYSOUTH HARRISON TWP. — Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger announced that March 2017 has been designated “Tire Amnesty Month” in Gloucester County.

The County will accept used tires from county residents and municipalities at the Solid Waste Complex in South Harrison Township Monday through Friday beginning March 1 and concluding Friday, March 31. A special Saturday drop-off will held on March 18.

Damminger said that tire amnesty month is an opportunity for our residents to bring in their old tires so the County can depose of them at no charge. Since 2001 the County has successfully removed 221,616 tires from the waste stream.

March is the only time tires are accepted at the County Solid Waste Complex during the year.  The collection in March allows for the tires to be shredded in April, before the mosquito breeding season. The collected tires are ground to chips which are used for construction projects within the facility.

County residents can dispose of up to 25 passenger car and passenger pick up tires at no cost at the Gloucester County Solid Waste Complex at 493 Monroeville Rd. (Route 694) in South Harrison Township, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am – 3 pm.  A special Saturday drop off will be held on March 18, rain-or-shine, and will run from 8 a.m. to Noon.

This program is for Gloucester County residents ONLY.  No commercial businesses will be accepted. Nothing over a passenger car or passenger pick up tire will be accepted from anyone this year. The tire type and limit of 25 will be strictly enforced.

County residents with more than 25 car tires must contact the GCIA/Office of Recycling at 856-478-6045 (ext. 13) to schedule a specific inspection and appointment in order to participate in the program. Tires may be on or off the rims, but they must be separated by type. They will be going into different piles.  Mixed loads will not be accepted.

In addition, no tractor trailer/oversized/heavy equipment tires will be accepted. A list of certified tire disposal facilities will be available for anyone that may need a service for larger tires.

Director Damminger said, “Abandoned tires collect standing water and become the prime breeding ground for mosquitos which not only carry the West Nile and Zika viruses but many other diseases. Providing an environmentally safe outlet for our residents to remove their tires is one way for us to stay vigilant in our fight against mosquito borne illnesses.”
