December 2018 Issue Obituaries

MELSON — Gary Melson Jr., 45. Gary had an unusual talent, a cookie maker especially chocolate chip. He was known among township residents from his activities of volunteering at the Mount Royal Fire Hall, mowing lawns, and riding his John Deere green tractor up and down Kings Highway, dragging his trailer full of weed whackers, rakes, shovels, and trash cans. He spent many of his younger years with local volunteer firemen as a member of the East Greenwich Fire Department.

Gary loved trains and enjoyed leisure hours working on his train table, making crafts, drawing and coloring, and assembling LEGO fire stations and trucks. He loved to tinker in the garage taking things apart and fixing things and making small wooden birdhouses. Christmas was his favorite time to work on his house where he would string the ramp with hundreds of lights and plant his hand made wooden Christmas tree out front. He was a graduate of Kingsway Regional High School and Gloucester County Institute of Technology where he earned a certificate in landscaping.

He was predeceased by his mother, Mary Ann Melson (Marino), and grandparents Mary and Charles Marino. He is survived by an aunt, Joan Cannon, cousins: John and Bryce (Amy) Cannon, Kathy Oakley and many second cousins of the Slusarski and Marino families. Donations in memory of Gary made to East Greenwich Fire Department, 5 Cohawkin Rd., Clarksboro, NJ 08020 will be appreciated.

CROCE — Alfred Robert Croce, age 78, of Clarksboro, passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Oct. 23.

Al, known by some as Duke, was a profoundly devoted family man. His true joy in life was spending his days with his wife, five children and eleven grandchildren all together. Sometimes found fishing on Lake Champagne, hunting, kayaking and laying on the beach in Sea Isle City, cheering on his Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies, cooking the perfect eggs with Haines bacon and homemade seasoned fried potato breakfast or taking pride in keeping an exquisitely manicured lawn. However, Al was usually and preferably found daily at one or more of the grandkid’s sports games, 3:20 p.m. school pickup, letting out his canine grandchildren, fixing anything that needed fixing, and running all over town just because his wife said their kids needed something. He proudly protected his loved ones, supported without judgement, and had an uncanny ability to connect with everyone in his path in a sincerely deep and positive way. He was simply THE BEST!

Al was born in Swedesboro and raised in Pitman before moving to Clarksboro where he remained. He was employed with E.I. DuPont for 36 years where he felt lucky to meet his amazing wife and some of his lifelong friends.

Beloved husband of 44 years to Sheryl L. (nee Burns); devoted father of Robert Croce (Janet), Deborah Greenberg (Arthur), Dana Christenson (Roger), Deanne Hughes (Bill), and Danae Ciociola (Fran); phenomenal Pop-Pop of Lindsay, Leah, Arthur, Alexa, Colton, Billy, Bella, Gabrielle, Raina, Breanne, and Rocco; adored son of the late Florence (nee Enick) and Vito Croce; dear brother to Roberta Englehart (John) and Stephen Croce (Linda); treasured uncle and friend to many.

GOODWIN — Tanya L. Goodwin, 49, of Woolwich Township. At work she was all work, but at home she was a joyous mom. Everything in Swedesboro from the fire department to the municipal works ran like a top thanks to Tanya, a borough clerk for the ages.

Always a tomboy, she excelled in sports at Upper Darby High. And she never lost her competitive spirit: if her kids beat her in board games, cards or horseshoes they knew it was a legit win. Later in life she bowled at Woodstown Lanes. Though as competitive as she was, she did lose one battle. After a few cordials on her son’s 21st birthday she took on a mechanical bull: bull won, her ankle shattered.

Tanya’s Tivo was full to the brim of The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. Relaxing times found her heading off to the Outer Banks, drinking a little wine, eating crabs and avoiding the beach. Her shoe collection put Imelda Marcos to shame.

Even in death Tanya gave life through her organ donations with the Sharing Network.

Family vacations found three-year-old Tanya Norsworthy meeting a kid named Bill Goodwin who was eight. Fifteen years later they’d start dating. Their 30-year marriage was blessed by two children: Brooke (Ryan) Goodwin-Hurst and Billy. She is survived by her parents, Patricia and Kenneth Norsworthy; her parents-in-law, Bill and Charlotte Goodwin; and her sister, Nicole English (Mark).

Interment Lake Park Cemetery, Woolwich Township. Donations to St Jude Hospital (Stjude.org) will be appreciated.

Sam was a lifelong Swedesboro resident who, together with his wife, Jean, owned and operated Early Acres Farm for over 65 years. They were true partners who not only cultivated the land and raised vegetables but cultivated and raised a family whom they cherished and who surrounded them on a daily basis.

Sam was a faithful member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, St. Joseph’s Church in Swedesboro where he was a devoted helper of the St. Joe’s and St. Alfio Committees. Sam also served on the Planning Board for Woolwich Township for many years. In his “free” time he enjoyed spending days with his loving family and friends, going to farm sales, and enjoying his beloved farm. His quiet strength, dignified presence, advice and honesty were respected and sought out by all who knew him.

McATEER — Rose V. McAteer (nee Cappello), 90. She lived to make other people happy: her restaurant, Rosie’s Diner, brought many a smile to many a customer. It was a natural transition for her since she was raised in her family’s restaurant and farm. It was more of a joy than a job. Pumpkin pie from scratch may have been her best recipe, but her pizzelles were nothing to scoff at. Later years found her at the Colonial Diner and Helen’s Greentree Restaurant: she never wanted to give it up.

If not in the kitchen she’d be showing off her green thumb: Rosie could take a sliver of a plant and sprout a garden from it. She also spent a little time working at a tie factory: everyone at her church would benefit from the ties she brought home.

But she was really meant to be a grandmother; at Christmas Nanny had stockings full of candy for her 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grands and three great-great grands. She was a loving mother, but you’d better be ready to duck quickly if you got out of line. Rosie was always up for a good time: Aged to Perfection Seniors Club will never forget her Halloween Bumble Bee Costume.

Rose was the wife of the late Oliver and mother of Rosemarie DelPiano, John Oliver, Sandy (Bill) Burleigh, Debbie Clements, Michele (Lou) Tirado, the late Millard Oliver and the late Linda Payne. She is survived by her sister, Angie Casella.

He attended the Medical School of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was vice president of his senior class.
