Logan Township Promotes Two From Its Police Department

BRIDGEPORT — At their meeting on May 21, the Logan Township Council approved two promotions within the ranks of the community’s police department. They first adopted a resolution elevating Sgt. Raymond Kennedy to lieutenant, and then promoted Officer Nicholas Barber to the rank of sergeant.

Logan Mayor Frank Minor swore the officers into their new positions. Minor called Kennedy a professional’s professional. ‘’I’ve worked with this guy for 17 years, and we have the best police force in the land,’’ Minor commented. “Continued success in all of your future endeavors.”

Minor noted that Barber has been with the Logan force for 13 years. “He’s done an outstanding job, and he’ll do a great job for all the people of Logan Township and the rest of the county he has to deal with.’’

Elsewhere, another resolution authorized that taxes be cancelled and/or refunded to property owners who fit the requirements of a one hundred percent disabled veteran. Such a veteran is exempt from paying taxes in the community.

Council also adopted an ordinance to Logan’s code entitled, “Smoking Prohibited on Public Property.” The ordinance was adopted on its second reading after a public hearing.

Other news saw Council table a resolution to introduce the 2019 Municipal Budget for Logan Township for the second straight month. Council passed an ordinance to exceed municipal budget appropriation limits and to establish a CAP Bank.

That would allow the 2019 budget to be increased by 3.5 percent over 2018. In a CAP Bank, the budget can be increased by up to 3.5 percent, and any part of that amount not appropriated for the final 2019 budget will be kept as an exception to final appropriation for the next two years.

Chief Financial Officer Will Pine is waiting for approval from the state.

Other reports saw the Logan Police Department list 1,488 calls for service during April. The local force has recently announced the reopening of its Junior Police Academy for 2019. The program is for Logan residents of ages 10 through 18 and will be held at the Logan Township Municipal Complex on July 15-19.

In new business, Council approved a request for an Adams Street block party submitted by David Christian. The party was scheduled for June 22.

Council also authorized a temporary use permit request for a tent by TNT Fireworks. The tent would be used for the sale of New Jersey approved sparkling devices at the 1619 Center Square ACME.

Other news found that Logan Township had earned $2,925 from the TRICO JIF 2018 Safety Incentive Program Award. Logan qualified for reimbursement of the money in recognition of their employees’ safety accomplishments.
