Swedish Stations of the Cross on Good Friday at Trinity “Old Swedes” Church

SWEDESBORO — Trinity Episcopal “Old Swedes” Church will conduct a Swedish historical Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, April 15 from 5 to 6 p.m.

The devotional exercise of praying in front of each of the 14 stations and meditating on the Passion of Christ stems from the practice of early Christian pilgrims who visited the scenes of the events in Jerusalem and walked the traditional route from the supposed location of Pilate’s house to Calvary. This service will recall the practices of the early settlers in New Sweden as they celebrated Good Friday (Långfredagen in Swedish).

Fellowship and a traditional Swedish Fika will be held afterwards.

Trinity was founded as a Swedish Lutheran parish in 1703 and was the first Swedish congregation in New Jersey. Worship services continued in Swedish until 1784, when it converted to an Episcopal Church.
