SWEDESBORO – According to Swedesboro Mayor Tom Fromm, the borough’s new sewer pump station is now online, allowing the borough to close their more than 60-year-old sewer plant.
The new pump station is part of the Gloucester County Utilities Authority Regional System. The Gloucester County Utility Authority constructed a sewer line from the Gloucester County Improvement Authority facility in South Harrison Township up to the Mantua Pumping Station in Mount Royal. Woolwich Township is also part of the county project.
Fromm said the old sewer plant was struggling to meet the stricter discharge permit limits for the outfall to Raccoon Creek. He stated that rather than spending over a million dollars to upgrade their facility or replace it, the borough opted to connect with the county system.
“The new pump station eliminates any treatment on-site as well as the discharge to the Raccoon Creek,” stated Fromm. “All flow from our town is now being sent directly to the Gloucester County plant in West Deptford.”
This new treatment facility will eliminate the odors that have plagued the area on the north entrance to the borough for years. The old plant as well as the new, are located at the intersection of Glenn Echo Avenue and Kings Highway.
