WOODBURY — The law firm of Hoffman DiMuzio has allocated close to half a million dollars to its “Gift of the Heart” Community Scholarship Foundation.
Forty-one graduating seniors from Gloucester and Salem County High Schools have been selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship for embodying the service ideals of the program. This week, the 2017 “Gift of the Heart” Hoffman DiMuzio Community Service Foundation recipients are from Kingsway High School: Joseph Glackin and Sydney Jaramillo.
Joseph Glackin
This Boy Scout of America took part in countless volunteer projects every year. Starting in first grade, Joseph Glackin has been an active member. To reduce litter, events were held to clean roadsides, hiking trails, and church grounds. In collaboration with the YES boy’s organization, Joseph taught kids about scouting skills.
Every December he joins the Kings Things food drive to bag and sort food. These examples are but a mere glimpse of the many hours Joseph has dedicated to the Boy Scouts organization.
For Joseph’s Eagle Scout project, he created an outdoor display board for the Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park to provide visitors with pertinent information. Additionally he helped the Fossil Park on their Community Dig Days, when the public can search for their own fossils. Joseph explains that he finds helping people to be extremely fulfilling pastime.
In addition to volunteering with Boy Scouts, Joseph lectors at his church and is a member of his school Astronomy and Chemistry clubs. Joseph has been accepted into the National Honor Society and the World Language National Honor Society.

Sydney Jaramillo
The Hearts United Against Cancer Organization aims to assist those battling cancer. As a staff member, Sydney Jaramillo has created and delivered “Care and Comfort Bundles” to men, women, and children in the tri state area. While she’s been involved in this project since September of 2015, Sydney has dedicated even more time to swimming.
Beginning at the Boys and Girls Club, Sydney taught kids how to swim for their own safety and for recreational purposes. She notes that drowning is a leading cause of accidental deaths; learning to swim is a great precautionary measure. Sydney is also a part of a swim mentor program at the Wenonah Swim Club and Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club. These programs, similarly, also allows younger swimmers to benefit from being taught by more experienced members.
At Kingsway, Sydney is a Renaissance Committee member, responsible for organizing events and incentives for the Renaissance program. Additionally, she is a member of the Kingsway Swim team, the Wenonah Swim Team, and Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club.
Academically, Sydney has been accepted into the National Honor Society and the Fox Chase TRIP initiative at Temple. With TRIP, a competitive summer program, she conducted research on the effects of a certain drug on fruit flies.
