SWEDESBORO — The Swedesboro council reviewed a proposal to build over 64-affordable-income homes between Church Street, Water Street, and Raccoon Creek at their April 17 meeting.
The developer, Eastern Pacific Developers, LLC, is asking the borough to grant them a 30 year tax abatement for the development.
During a discussion of the tax exemption, Councilmember Sam Casella noted there were errors in the agreement which were confusing, and the council agreed that more clarification needed to be made.
During that meeting Council gave final approval to their municipal budget. The budget includes a 2 cent increase in local municipal tax rate, resulting in a $35 increase for residents with an average assessed home in Swedesboro of $172,000.
In other news, construction in Swedesboro for the roundabout at the intersection of Auburn Road, High Hill Road, and Bridgeport Avenue has begun. Phase one of construction will last 16 weeks, with phase two beginning in the fall.
Detour signs have been placed along Auburn Road and High Hill Road. Mayor Tom Fromm hopes construction will be cleared enough in time for the Dragon Race in September.
A capital ordinance for a sewer collapse on Second Street was also passed. The sewer breach was on the corner of Dunn Drive and Ashton Avenue, and funds needed to be moved in order to pay for the costs of repair. “It’s in an emergency state,” Fromm said.
The Parks and Recreation Committee met and discussed Fun Day activities, which takes place on Saturday, May 6. Councilmember Joanna Gahrs expressed concerns about fireworks.
This year the display will be behind the PNC building just off of Center Square Road. A notice will be sent to neighboring homes as soon as possible to warn them of the loud noises.
Dry fire hydrants were installed on East and Park Avenue. Woolwich Fire Company officials came to thank the borough for the new hydrants, and so far things have run smoothly.
The inspection of Swedesboro’s water tower was completed, with no incidents reported in Swedesboro of water pressure problems. Fromm does not have the results for the inspection but should by next council meeting.
