BRIDGEPORT — At the Logan Township Council meeting on April 18, Deputy Mayor Chris Morris announced that the community’s athletic fields at Township Line Park would be getting state-of-the art LED lighting. The Logan Soccer Complex had been renting lights for about $15,000 per season, while the girls softball field is not currently lit.
“We are currently in the process of getting these LED lights,” Morris commented. “This is something I wanted to do for a long time.” The LED lights are said to be energy-efficient and offer a better quality of light.
Morris said most other communities have these lights, and they will take care of safety issues and equity issues. The Deputy Mayor acknowledged that there had been a lot of planning behind the scenes, saying that he and the other Councilmembers are big supporters of Logan’s athletic programs.
Morris explained that they wanted to get the lights last year, but the township faced other budget issues. He said Logan was able to include the funds in this year’s budget. The new lights are expected to be in operation the summer.
The girls softball team holds practices in the fall and spring, and has been affected by seasonal conditions and daylight savings time. Morris added that the girls deserved the new lighting, but it didn’t hurt that the Logan team became District 15 Champions in 2016.
Morris gave Logan’s Public Works Department and Superintendent Mike Riley credit for having the athletic fields in great shape for Little League Opening Day. Riley reported that his department had been cutting grass on township properties, along with mulching.
In resolutions, Council authorized a shared service agreement with West Deptford Township for the use of administrator services. Also, they approved the purchase of fire protective equipment under a state contract.
Elsewhere, Logan’s police report for March saw 1,491 calls for service and 174 motor vehicle summonses being issued. In new business, Council approved a request for summer hours of the municipal building to move to 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, beginning May 30 to September 1.
