WOOLWICH TWP. — The End of Prostate Cancer joins New Jersey Urology to host the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk this November. Longtime Woolwich Twp. residents, Joe and Helen Musumeci, are doing their part as volunteers with ZERO-The End of Prostate Cancer. Participants from the South Jersey area will run and walk together on Nov. 7 to fight a disease that takes the life of an American man every 15 minutes. There will be a 5K Run/Walk, a 1 Mile Walk, and the ever-popular Kids superhero Dash for Dad.
Registration is free. Fundraisers of $50 or more will receive race shirts and wine (must be 21+). The race will take place at Valenzano Winery, 1090 Route 206, Shamong, NJ 08088. For more information, visit www.zeroprostatecancerrun.org/SouthJersey.
Run/Walk participants will receive t-shirts, free food and prizes, and the opportunity to connect with others who are impacted by prostate cancer. A special ceremony for patients and survivors serves as the heart of every event and why we run/walk.
The goal is to create Generation ZERO – the first generation of men who are free of prostate cancer.
The Musumeci’s, are spending their retirement years volunteering with ZERO-The End of Prostate Cancer. As a runner, Joe runs as many of the races as he can. Some are in-person, and some are virtual due to health recommendations for the area. When he isn’t running, Joe is facilitator of a support group, Fighting Men Fighting Cancer. Currently they meet virtually and have members from a number of states.
The job of caregiver is one that can be difficult so, when several people expressed an interest in getting together, Helen recently organized TLC Tender Loving Caregivers. She facilitates that group.
If anyone would like to join either of these groups, contact Joe and Helen at 856-278-1679. They sometimes will have a speaker on a related topic of interest, but the mission of the groups is to provide a place for low key discussion and sharing experiences with others.
Both Musumecis are a part of ZERO’s Mentoring Program through which each is matched with a person to call, email, or text about concerns they may have. Joe works with the MENtor program, and Helen is assigned mentees through the CAREGIVER CONNECTOR program. Everyone can help with this worthy cause.
Funds raised for this year’s Run/Walk event will go toward local and national efforts to provide research for new treatments, direct patient support, and to educate men and families about prostate cancer. More than $4M was raised in the 2020 ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk series.
