WOOLWICH TWP. — Gloucester County Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger, Freeholder Heather Simmons and Assemblyman Adam J. Taliaferro cut the ribbon in May to open the Hendrickson Road Mill Road Bridge in Woolwich Township.  The bridge had been closed since two storms in August of 2011, one of which was Hurricane Irene, made the bridge fail.

Damminger said, “The two storms that impacted the structural quality of this bridge happened so fast and close together in 2011 that the county did not have funding in our budget to replace it.  We worked diligently with our state representatives and FEMA and secured the funding, it just took a long time for FEMA to release the funds, but now we are pleased to reconnect this community.”

immons said that the bridge that was replaced was over 90 years old.  “After receiving the funding from FEMA to replace this bridge, the county completed it in less than four months,” said Simmons, Liaison to the Department of Public Works and Office of the County Engineer.

“This completed replacement project had a pipe arch installed within the existing stream channel. The coarse aggregate stone bedding and pipe have been constructed and locked together. There is new guiderail and the whole structure is sound and attractive,” said Simmons. Taliaferro said, “The county did a great job completing this bridge and saving the county taxpayers from using county funds to replace it.  As a Woolwich resident and someone who was involved on the county level, I am pleased this is finished and pleased for the community.”

This $361,600 project is 100% funded by the FEMA and NJDOT.
