Logan Council Considers Beckett Road Traffic Problems

BRIDGEPORT — During their meeting on June 19, the Logan Township Council discussed speeding and traffic problems at Quail Ridge. In the public portion of the meeting, Catalano Lane resident Bruce Hutchison said vehicles had been speeding and running stop signs down his street.

Many of the larger trucks are coming from Beckett Road. As Logan Township has been building up its businesses, truck traffic has increased in the township.

Logan Deputy Mayor Chris Morris has long been a supporter of cutting back on truck traffic on Beckett Road because of the large number of children playing around the area, and going back and forth across the street.

“There’s only so much the police can do, and these resources are not available all the time,” Morris commented about the speeding. The Deputy Mayor said he was working with engineering and looking into legal options to keep tractor trailers off Beckett Road.

Morris believes that added signage and rumble strips have made some difference in the matter. Buttonwood Place resident David Powell feels differently. “They don’t slow them down,” Powell argued. “It just exacerbates the problem, and they’re noisy.”

Another Buttonwood resident, Councilmember Doris Hall, agreed that something needed to be done. Morris added that he was looking forward to coming up with some solutions for the residents in that area.

In Logan’s police report, the department responded to 1,475 calls to service in May, made 24 arrests, and issued 224 motor vehicle summonses. Elsewhere, in a series of resolutions, Council awarded the contract for the 2018 Township Line Road roadway improvements Phase 2 to Landberg Construction, LLC.

Landberg submitted the low bid of four received at $132,490.45. Another adopted resolution gave Landberg Construction payment of $74,155.87 for Logan Township’s 2017 road program.

Council next approved payment of $18,796 to Ronald Janney Electrical Contractor, Inc. for the 2017 Township Line Park sports field lighting project.

Council also authorized a state contract purchase of a 2018 Police Ford Interceptor SUV to Cherry Hill Winner Ford for $27,572. Then Council awarded a contract of $24,300 to Levy Construction Company for the Logan Township Police Department window replacement, brick installation and door installation.

The next resolution renewed Logan Township’s membership in the Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland Counties Municipal Joint Insurance Fund. This is a three-year agreement that begins in January 2019.

Council also appointed alternate member Peter Kordziel to an unexpired term in Logan’s Environmental Commission. He replaced Robert Glocker, who passed away in April.

Logan Mayor Frank Minor thanked Kurdziel for stepping up, and expressed condolences to the members of Glocker’s family for their loss.

In new business, Council accepted the Peachwood Recreation Club and Peachwood Pirates Swim Committee’s request for temporary event parking on the pool side of Peachwood Drive. Events were to be held on July 4, July 21 and Sept. 3.
