Leslie Worrell Christianson, daughter of Thomas and Delores Worrell of Woolwich Township, Kingsway Regional High School graduate and Assistant Professor/Librarian at Marywood University in Scranton Pennsylvania was selected to speak at the International Federation of Library Associations Information Literacy Satellite Meeting held in Limerick, Ireland. The presentation which took place in August titled Uncharted Territory: Exploring Information Literacy Instruction in a Cross-Cultural Higher Education Program highlighted the work she and fellow Marywood librarian Julia Watson (Bucks County, Pa) have been doing with nuns in Africa through the Higher Education for Sisters in Africa (HESA) program. At the conference, Christianson and Watson discussed how they developed an information literacy program for the Sisters which included instruction through video conferencing, curating a collection of online and print resources and providing ongoing support to the students throughout their course of study. Catholic nuns in Africa are deeply trusted by their societies and work to improve the course of life by serving where the needs are the greatest – in schools, healthcare facilities and human service centers. While their impact on society is significant, many lack access to higher education. The goal of the HESA program is to provide access to higher education to nuns living in remote areas of Africa through alternative means including distance learning. Marywood University is providing two years of instruction through the HESA program then the Sisters will matriculate into the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) where they will work towards a BA in Education. Marywood’s partnership with CUEA is the first and other institutions are participating. Christianson’s and Watson’s work is the model for information literacy instruction for the HESA program and will provide guidance and advice to other librarians in partnering institutions. Christianson received her Bachelor of Arts in Art Studio and Art History from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and her Master of Library and Information Science from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Eric Brandt, son of Peter and Catherine Brandt, of Mickleton graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL. Training included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ”Navy” flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Brandt is a 2012 graduate of Kingsway Regional High School, Woolwich Township.
