WOOLWICH TWP. — Infinity Fencing Alliance in Woolwich Township has been recognized by the National Fencing Club Ranking Organization as the Best Fencing Club for Veteran Women’s Sabre in the United States and 12th in the Nation for Veteran Men’s Sabre.
Veteran means adults over the age of 40. It is determined yearly by competition success of fencers in a club. There are 615 USFA Member Fencing Clubs in the US.
Jane Eyre, five time World Champion and Ellen O’Leary, three time World Champion, train at IFA with Fencing Master Wang Yung who himself is a World Champion and one of only five Master Sabre coaches in the country.
Both Eyre and O’Leary are also ranked number 1 in their respective age groups in the USA so essentially, Infinity is also the best and most successful Fencing Club for Veteran Women’s Sabre in the world.
Eyre, O’Leary and Yung are presently in training for the Veteran World Championships being held October in Stralsund, Germany. This event is the equivalent of the Olympics for adult fencers. In eight weeks Eyre will defend her three year run and O’Leary her two years of holding the World Champion title.
Infinity Fencing Alliance offers classes for all ages. Students ranging in age from 8 to 18, those in their 20s and 40s, as well as 60s and above. Fencers can compete in their respective age groups throughout their lives.
There are local, regional, national and international tournaments available to fencers. In North Jersey there are over 40 private fencing clubs and over 50 varsity high school teams.
Infinity is one of only two clubs in South Jersey, the only one focused on sabre, the only club with a coach who is a Master Sabre coach, and the only one with fulltime dedicated space for training.
Many people fence to get in to top colleges and universities. Fencing has one of the highest recruitment rates among all sports. Other fencers choose the fencing for fun and recreation.
It is also one of the safest sports, with less injuries than in badminton.
It’s never too late to learn to fence. Eyre began fencing at age 44 when her only son went away to college. O’Leary started at 63 and has medaled in nine out of the last 10 World Championships.
