WOOLWICH TWP. – Three Woolwich Township residents were named national finalists at The 50th Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics Games, the largest national multi-sport event for youth in the United States, were held in Houston from July 30 – Aug. 6.
Kassadi Avent won the National Championship in two events for 9-year-olds. She won the triathlon (shot put, high jump, and 200), finishing at 1,017 points. She also took the gold medal in the high jump with a season’s best of 4 foot 1 ¼ inches.
Her older sister, Kennedi, finished fourth in the 12-year-old girls high jump with a jump of 4 foot 9 inch. She also placed fifth in the pentathlon (80 meter hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put and 800) with 2,705 points.
Both girls are member of the Camden P.A.L. Track Club. Anya George of the Chester Cheetahs Track Club finished third in the 9-year-old girls Triathlon with 809 points.
The 50th USA Track & Field (USATF) National Junior Olympic Championships were held in Sacramento, CA from July 25-31. Fazl Oshodi, also from Woolwich Township, placed eighth in the 11-12 year old boys 1500m with a time of 4:47, and eighth in the 3000m with a season’s best time of 10:14.

The township’s athletes’ national journey began at the Middle Atlantic District Qualifier held at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, PA on June 11-12, and then at the Region 2 Qualifier meet held at Stockton University in Galloway Township on June 24-26.
