WOOLWICH TWP. — In honor of Veteran’s Day, McGuinness Funeral Home held a scholarship competition asking local students to write an essay on the topic, “Why is Veteran’s Day Important”. Skylar Galati, a Kingsway Regional High School junior, was the winning recipient and attended a celebration to receive her scholarship on Nov. 9 at their Woodbury office.
Her essay not only included why it is important to honor the Veterans, but also included stories as to why this day is so personal to her.
This scholarship competition was open to all high school students throughout Gloucester County. In addition, because of the nature of the topic, rather than being held close to graduation it was held closer to the date of remembrance.
In the past few years, McGuiness has been reaching out to become a big part of Gloucester County. In conjunction with the Veteran’s Day scholarship, they also hosted a Donate a Suit for Our Returning Heroes, held in conjunction with Farmers Insurance – Joseph Giacobbe Agency.
McGuinness also hosts many other free events throughout the year including and estate planning event called Tea at Ten, a Toys for Tots toy drive and a Holiday Candle Lightening Remembrance. They are also involved in fundraising and giving back to the community with events for Mothers Cupboard.
In the past they have held meaningful butterfly and balloon releases. Every event is a celebration of life and they have found a way to reach out to make times of grief less painless.
