Logan Offers 2nd Outdoor Summer Basketball League

logan bball webLOGAN TWP. – Back again this summer is the popular Logan Township Basketball Association Summer Basketball League for children in Grades 5 through 9. This summer’s league will run from July 10 to Aug. 10 and registration information will be coming out soon through the schools.

Summer Basketball registration will be held at the Logan Elementary School Gym on Monday, June 5 from 6 to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, June 7 from 6 to 7 p.m.

For $25 dollars players played on age appropriate teams with a referee present on the courts located on Township Line Road in Logan Township. Some coaches and players from Swedesboro-Woolwich participated in the league. High school students also helped coach some of the younger teams and there were no playoffs, standings, or trophies.

“Players and parents really enjoyed having the program here in Logan Township. Without the work of Rick Shinholster, Art Smith, and Don Depew, we would never be able to pull this off,” said Logan Basketball President Jack Marcellus.

“The participation of Swedesboro-Woolwich players and parents was a tremendous help as this league requires about five to seven volunteers to be present every night. Without the help of Woolwich resident Rick Shinholster, the league would not have been as successful as it was last year.

“Players who compete all winter against each other had the opportunity to have fun and play some basketball. Rick makes sure the kids are always having fun,” Marcellus said.

“Sharing responsibility, keeping kids active, and promoting teamwork resulted in a big success last summer and I’m sure this summer will be even better,” said Marcellus.

The summer league will be named after Jay Rodgers who was actively involved in Logan basketball, among other efforts, for many years. The league also shared the cost for a trophy case in Logan Elementary School to showcase the achievements of the Logan teams.

The trophy case, which now is located outside of the Logan Elementary School gym in the hallway, was an idea from Rodgers.
