SHIVELER — Glenn Howard Shiveler, 57, of Tulsa, passed away on Sept. 14.
Born in Camden, NJ, Glenn grew up on the family farm in Logan Township. He was a 1979 graduate of Kingsway Regional High School and a 1983 graduate of Rutgers University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. Glenn moved to Tulsa in 1985, where he was employed at Nutter Engineering / Sulzer ChemTech for over 30 years, served as an officer in numerous professional organizations and authored a number of technical publications.
Glenn traveled across the country and internationally for work and pleasure, and treasured vacations with his daughters. He enjoyed photography, reading history books, skiing, hiking and wandering museums.
Glenn is survived by his daughters Samantha (fiancé Michael) and Vicky (fiancé Austin), mother Mary N. Shiveler, and sister Carol Ewald (Mike). He was predeceased by his father, Walter J. Shiveler.
The family suggests donations be made in Glenn’s name to the American Heart Association.

HOWELL — Joanne Howell, 67, of Swedesboro. She was most known for her community service, but Joanne’s grin betrayed her mischievous side. Senior year at Kingsway High School found her suspended for riding her Harley through the hallways and after graduation she was off to Woodstock with 400,00 new friends.
Joanne came from a family with roots back generations in Swedesboro. She’d follow in their footsteps into Trinity Episcopal Church and Woolwich Fire Company. Joanne was a past president of the ladies auxiliary working many a fundraiser.
She always had a sporty ride, swapping out her Harley for a string of eight Mustangs. In work Joanne brought her light to many a dark place. She became an LPN and worked at local hospitals and the Camden prison until it closed. As an ombudsman at Trenton State she helped prisoners with their release: yelling was never her method, she won the men over with patience and understanding. But even Joanne’s patience had limits: refs regularly threatened to eject her from her kids’ soccer games.
Of course, she found her greatest years once she became a grandmother. She was an awesome mother and grandmother to Jaqui Rogers (Joseph), Andy Noll and her five grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, Jack Howell, Jr. and was predeceased by her son, David Noll, her sister, Jacqueline DeVault and daughter in law Dora Faye Noll.

HARDY — James Hardy, 53. “God, Country, and Family” was James’ motto.
His earlier years found him at Glassboro College with hopes of getting into stage production, an interest that first started at Camden Catholic. When he discovered there was a requirement for a dance class (not wearing work boots) he quickly exited stage left. James went back to what he enjoyed–working with his hands as a carpenter. Though he was a field supervisor for several builders, he always insisted he was just a carpenter by trade.
Of course, Glassboro State wasn’t a total bust: a young Mary Conklin caught his eye. He asked her out, but she told him she had homework to do: watching a movie about Zulu Tribes. He stole her heart when he joined her that night.
Nuptials soon followed. Even though he was never much of a joiner, he boasted perfect attendance at the Living Room Princess Club with other founding members: son, Nicholas (Megan) and daughter, Ellen. He is survived by his father, Bob Hardy (Florence); brothers, Robert Hardy, Tim Hardy (Tracy); sisters, Cathy Cooney (Chris), Trish Bear (Ryan), Theresa Forsyth (Paul) and Sara Hardy (Bobby). He was predeceased by his mother, Peg and brother, Billy.

SCHOBER — Alfred F. Schober Jr., 88, Clarksboro. Alfred F. Schober Jr. passed away peacefully at his home with his family at his side on Oct. 1. Al was born on Dec. 11, 1929 to Alfred and Christina Schober in Swedesboro. Al is survived by his wife of 65 years, Trudy J. Schober. He was the father of Linda (Dale) Sizemore of Clarksboro, Rick (Tricia) Schober of Mickleton, Bill (Jill) Schober of Mickleton, Tom (Sue) Schober of West Deptford. He was the proud grandfather of 17 and great grandfather of 10. Al is also survived by his sister in law and brother in law, May and Willis Smick of West Deptford. He was predeceased by his sister, Elaine Rode.
Al lived in Clarksboro his entire life and loved his community. He graduated from Swedesboro High School where he played baseball and football and was president of his class. He attended Camden Business School after high school and joined his father at Charles Schober Co., in Philadelphia, a business founded by his grandfather.
In 1951, he was drafted into the Army and served his country for two years. In 1953, he married Trudy (nee McKnight). He would work over 50 years in the family wicker import business where his three sons would join him.
He was the East Greenwich Township water clerk in the late 50’s and early 60’s. He was active in the Indian Guides, Little League, and was a charter member of the East Greenwich Lions Club. He served as the zone chairman and deputy district governor for the Lions.
Al was a devoted member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church for 75 years. In his younger years, he taught Sunday school, was a trustee, and was the chairman of the administrative council.
Al had a blessed life and family was important. Al and Trudy enjoyed many summers in their Ocean City home with their children and grandchildren. GIORDANO — Samuel “Big Sam” Giordano Sr., age 68 years, of Clarksboro died Sept. 30 in Penn Presbyterian Hospital, Philadelphia with his family by his side.
Sam was born in Camden and raised in Paulsboro where he graduated from Paulsboro High School Class of 1968. He was a veteran serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. Sam joined the Paulsboro Police force as a patrolman and later retired as a Sergeant after 23 years of service with the East Greenwich Police Department.
He was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, St. John’s Church, past member of East Greenwich Parks and Recreation Committee, served on the Executive Board of East Greenwich Little League and was a founder of East Greenwich Midget Football League. He enjoyed coaching sports, helping his community and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Carole Giordano (nee Alcott) of Clarksboro; his children, Jennifer Pieta of Mantua, Samuel Jr. and Gina Giordano of Clarksboro; his grandchildren, Mark, Alexandria, Madison Jane, Ezra, Amelia, Elliana and Olivia and his sister, Marie and Richard Keuler of West Deptford. Sam was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Amelia Giordano, his brother, Nicholas Giordano and his sister, Catherine Askin.

STEWART-MITCHELL — Sarah Lucile Stewart-Mitchell, 96, passed away peacefully on Oct. 7 at Inspira Medical Center, Woodbury. A lifelong resident of Swedesboro, Sarah was an active member of the community. Well known as a fashion icon throughout the South Jersey region, Sarah paired her love of fashion with a commitment to public service, social change, and civic activism. A Christian woman of immense faith and character, Sarah was a member of the historic Mt. Zion AME Church.

POOLE — Margaret R. Poole (nee Ray), age 83 years, of Mickleton died Oct. 8 in Shady Lane, Clarksboro, with her family by her side.
She was born in St. Clare, PA and raised in Pottsville. In the early 50’s she moved to Paulsboro; marrying in 1955 and moving to Mickleton in 1957 to the new home she and her husband Elmer built. She retired after 35 years of service as a rural mail carrier in Mickleton. Mrs. Poole enjoyed traveling, watching stock car races and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, RayAnn and Alvin Perdue of Sherrillsford, N.C., Terry Poole of Mickleton; her grandchildren, Captain Ashley and Kensley Perdue, Stacie Poole and her fiance, Bobby Bracall; her great-grandson, Sterling; her brother, Joseph and Jane Vernay of Pottsville, PA and her sister, Kathleen Berger, also of Pottsville, PA. Mrs. Poole was predeceased by her husband, Elmer G. Poole and her brother-in-law, Bob Berger.

RICHMOND — Robert Hawley Richmond, 92, of Mullica Hill, passed away on Oct. 10 at Brightview Woodbury Lake, Woodbury.
Born in Prospect Park, PA, he was employed as an Instrument Technician with Local 322 in Westville. Bob was an Army veteran of World War II proudly serving in the European Theatre of War from 1944-1946 as an Infantryman with General Patton’s Third Army 10th Regiment fighting in Germany, France and Czechoslovakia. Known as Mr. Fix-It, Bob could fix anything from cars to electronics to household appliances.
His family and his Christian religion were the most important things to him. He was an active member of Hardingville Bible Church. He also enjoyed summers at their Cape May Point home and was a 14 year resident of Mullica Hill, formerly of Mickleton. Predeceased by his daughter, Frances M. Richmond, he is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mildred A. (nee Rowat); his daughter, Carol A. Richmond (David Rothenberg); his sons, Robert J. Richmond and William T. Richmond (Peggy); six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

OAKES — Richard V. Oakes, 76. He spent a lifetime turning a wrench with the best of them. As a young man Rich tinkered with cars with his Dad: it inspired him to pursue it as his career. He eventually purchased a shop in Paulsboro, Rich’s Auto. And his love of cars eventually led him to the track: a life best lived at 150 mph, a quarter mile at a time. Quieter moments found him in his yard: as pristine as Longwood Gardens, the birds and deer by his side, mindful of all God’s creatures. As a member of the West Jersey Radio Control Club he knew the joy of pulling back on the yoke and watching his planes soar to the clouds. He proudly served our nation in the Army.
One day while fixing a car Rich heard the screech and groan of a crash. He ran from the shop to make sure the driver was Ok and offered the lovely Sylvia a ride home. Rich’s good deed led to romance and a 36 year marriage that even pneumonia couldn’t stop: they wed in Underwood Hospital.
They came together with six children: Robyn Hinman (Donald), Michele McNichol (William), Dawn Lippincott (Ronald), Chris Miller (Kristi), Christine Gibbins and Ricky Gibbins. He was later blessed by 15 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Rich is also survived by a sister, Alice Housel (Ed) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Carol Piper. CANTWELL — Brian Cantwell, age 31, formerly of Clarksboro, died Oct. 17, as a result of a catastrophic stroke while detoxing from the scourge of heroin.
He is survived by his bereaved family, Mark and Leslie (nee Applegate) and big sister, Erin.
Brian, 1st runner up for Mr. Kingsway Class of 2005, spent his short career in the food service industry cooking for various restaurants in South Jersey and the Florida Keys. Brian enjoyed composing and performing music, skateboarding, snowboarding, golf and fishing.
