THE SKY was blue, the breeze light, and the grass was dry after a week’s rain, a perfect morning to pay respect to US Medal of Honor recipient Brigadier General Louis Henry Carpenter with a wreath laying ceremony at the Trinity Church New cemetery June 22. Participants, Woolwich Mayor Vern Marino, Woolwich Committeeman Dan Battisti, and members of the Swedesboro-Woolwich Historical Society, welcomed the New Jersey Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club (NJBSMC). For the second year the NJBSMC have included paying their respects to Gen. Carpenter, commander of the 10th Calvary, as part of their Children’s Ride for Life charity event. The 10th Cavalry was one of four Buffalo Soldiers regiments which served in the western United States following the Civil War. Gen. Carpenter was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions rescuing a besieged Army unit in Colorado. He joins 14 Buffalo Soldiers who were awarded America’s highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.
