Swedesboro Opts Out of Cannabis Operations

SWEDESBORO — A public hearing regarding cannabis was held at the virtual Swedesboro Council meeting on July 19 when the council unanimously voted to opt out of the operation of any cannabis business.

Mayor Thomas Fromm stated that they are currently not going to change any zoning laws and are now in a “holding pattern” until after the state laws are confirmed. It was also established that the council can opt back in later.

In Board of Health news, the national organization Quilts of Valor will be donating eight quilts to local veterans on Veteran’s Day or at the annual veteran’s luncheon. The organization, which was founded in 2003, was designed to bring a message of hope and healing to all those who have served our country in the past, present and future.

Joan Robinson of Woolwich Twp handmade the quilts and will be working closely with the organization to distribute them. There will be a lottery-type system to choose who will receive the quilts. Under Parks and Recreation, Councilperson Jo Anna Gahrs announced that on Aug. 13, Lock Ave Park will host a Movie Night. The event, which is scheduled to begin at dusk, will feature Pixar’s Onward as the film for the evening.

In addition, Gahrs went on to state that Lock Ave Park will have a holiday village and tree lighting event on Dec 4.

In other news, during a recent storm, a trampoline took flight, damaging a neighbor’s siding, solar panel, and vehicle. It flew over that house and hit another, eventually coming to a stop on that home’s porch.  Although there is no regulation for trampolines, it is highly suggested to make sure it is properly weighted down if you own one.

Woolwich Fire Chief David Valichka stated that the fire company had a busy month, including four house fires and many false alarms, with culinary mishaps being the main culprit.

In financial news, to date, 61 percent of the regular budget has been spent, as well as 58 percent of the utility budget.
