10-hour Training Course this October!!!
WOODBURY — Literacy New Jersey, Gloucester County Programs is currently looking for virtual volunteers to teach English as a second language (ESL) and Pre-GED/HSE tutors for Gloucester County residents who struggle with reading, writing and speaking English.
The virtual tutor-training course runs every Tuesday from Oct. 5 to Nov. 2, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Zoom. The program also offers volunteers the opportunity to attend virtual workshops, state conferences and participate in fundraising and social events.
Anyone interested in learning more about the program should call the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator, Nicole Quinn or e-mail nquinn@literacynj.org.
The program is designed to help individuals and families gain more independence in their lives. Basic tasks we might take for granted – filling out doctor’s forms, reading signs, going grocery shopping, or attending a child’s school conference – may be difficult or impossible for these
individuals. Tutors, however, can and do change lives, give hope to those who need it and dramatically improve the quality of individuals’ lives.
“I had several students; but, it was not until I met Jude, a young man from Haiti, that I decided that I was up to the challenge. I am not an English Major that is for sure. Jude challenged me at every session, His thirst to achieve was contagious. We spent almost three years together. His English improved to the extent that he was able to apply for a position driving tractor-trailers. He passed the written and oral exams with flying colors.
I now have a student from Peru. When I asked her why she wanted to learn to read and write English, she simply stated, “Because I live in America now.” It has been a rewarding and fun experience with Literacy New Jersey these past 4 years.” – Richard Egloff
Literacy New Jersey offers a 10-hour virtual tutor training course that gives volunteer tutors practical, hands on training to work with adults in small group settings, and includes online training that focuses on resources for reading, writing and speaking, and strategies for lesson planning. This course prepares volunteers to tutor private classes, help students prepare for the US citizenship exam or HSE exam (formally the GED), lead a conversation group or lead a small ESL or reading group. No prior teaching experience is necessary.
