GIBBSTOWN — The South Jersey Baseball Old Timers have named Paul Oland as the guest speaker for their annual banquet which will take place on Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. at St. Michael’s Mutual Club, 406 Memorial Ave, Gibbstown.
Oland was captain of the 1969 Kingsway baseball team and continued playing for 15 years as a first baseman in Salem County Baseball League.
Oland has written about local baseball history, and his dinner topic will be, “Goose Goslin to Mike Trout: South Jersey Baseball History.” Goslin, of Salem, was a star outfielder in the American League from 1922-38 and is the region’s only member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Trout, a Millville native, is an 11 time All-Star outfielder for the Angels.
The career of Earl Rapp, a 1940 Swedesboro High School graduate, will also be discussed. Rapp was a decorated Army veteran of WWII who went on to play as a major league outfielder. He then spent a long career as a scout for the Houston Astros.
