WOOLWICH TWP. – The Historic Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church at 172 Garwin Road in Swedesboro (across form Kingsway High School) will celebrate its 225th Anniversary on Sunday, Oct.6.
Our special guest preacher at the 3 p.m. service will be First District Bishop Samuel Lawrence Green Sr. of Philadelphia.
Mt. Zion Swedesboro has been identified as part of the Underground Railroad network. The historic cemetery behind the church contains the remains of slaves and 12 Civil War veterans. Both locations are listed as State and National Historic Sites.
Mr. Zion continues to be a symbol of African American heritage, culture, history, and ancestral legacy, as it fulfills the roll of the church in the local community. The church building and cemetery are maintained by dedicated members, the Swedesboro VFW, and HELP, Inc. We also appreciate donations that help us with repairs and maintenance.
We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, Oct.6 at 3 p.m. After service there will be refreshments and a tour of the cemetery.
If you are unable to attend but would like to give a donation, please send a check to Mt. Zion AME Church, PO Box 185, Swedesboro, NJ 08085.
