5th graders raise $4,000 to provide for others

WOOLWICH TWP. — Local 5th grade students from Harker School have demonstrated the power of community and compassion by raising over $4,000 during this holiday season.

Their efforts were aimed at assisting Angels Community Outreach in Pitman, an organization dedicated to providing families in need with a “hand up.” Under the guidance of their teacher, Mrs. Tara Roberto, the students set an ambitious goal to raise $1,000, but their determination and creativity propelled them to achieve much more.

The students initiated their fundraising efforts by crafting bracelets for sale, helping neighbors with chores, engaging in discussions with family members, and even delivering speeches at Thanksgiving gatherings to spread awareness about the mission of Angels Community Outreach. They truly showed their commitment to making a difference.

This year’s initiative was dubbed “Operation Magical Moments Angel” reflecting their desire to create memorable experiences for families in need. The first purchase was 15 gingerbread houses, symbolizing the joy of families coming together to celebrate the holiday.

The students did not stop there. They sponsored at least seven families by fulfilling their wish lists, purchased four brand new bicycles, donated winter clothing, and prepared Santa Sacks for Veterans and residents in nursing homes.

Additionally, they helped stock a local food pantry and provided gift cards to grocery stores to support holiday dinners for families facing financial difficulties.

The roots of this project date back to 2020 when Mrs. Roberto first initiated “Operation Warm Angel”. Inspired by an article that highlighted the impact one person can have, her students embraced the idea that they too could make a difference.

Their initial goal was to raise enough money to buy a space heater for a family in need, and in just four days, they exceeded their expectations by raising over $2,000. This early success laid the groundwork for their continued efforts and demonstrated that there are no limits to what they can achieve.

This year holds particular significance for the students, as they surpassed their cumulative goal of raising $10,000. In total, students in Mrs. Roberto’s class have raised over $13,000 since the project’s inception, providing vital support to families through Angels Community Outreach.

The pride that Mrs. Roberto feels for her students is palpable. As they witnessed the tangible impact of their efforts on their community, their motivation to help others grew stronger.

This journey has not only highlighted their own good fortune but has also empowered them to recognize their ability to effect change. The ripple effect created by their kindness and determination continues to expand, encouraging others to contribute to the greater good.

In conclusion, the story of Harker School’s students is a testament to the capacity of young individuals to drive meaningful change within their communities. Through their creativity, determination, and compassion, they have not only raised funds but have also cultivated a culture of giving that will inspire future generations.
