LOVELL — Theodore Isaac Lovell of Red Bank, NJ, and formerly of Woolwich Township passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Feb. 12 at the age of 96.

Ted was an adventurous man who lived his life fully, exactly as he chose. He was an avid reader, and a renaissance craftsman and outdoorsman. With his trademark Bourbon Sour in hand, friends and family remember him as a great orator; children especially recall being captivated by his thrilling stories.

A frontrunner in the electrical engineering field, Ted scaled a small company to a successful, well-respected enterprise that he led until the age of 90. He favored Cadillacs but loved his 1975 silver Stingray Corvette and Honda motorcycle. Ted was a talented musician who played the accordion and the piano and was a passionate theater organ music enthusiast. One of his proudest possessions was a four manual 63 rank theater organ.

Ted was born in the Borough of Totowa, NJ on May 10, 1928, the son of the late Ethel Caroline Lovell (Berner) and the late George Whiting Lovell. He graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1946, and entered the then Newark College of Engineering, (NJIT) to study electrical engineering, and completed his degree as an E.E. from the Canadian Institute of Technology in 1961.

After their father’s death, Ted and his brother, George Lovell, continued their father’s electrical contracting business, Lovell Electric Company. Following George’s retirement, Ted opened Lovell Design Services, offering engineering design for water treatment projects located in the United States as well as Panama, Iraq and the Caribbean Islands.

Ted was blessed with four wonderful daughters from his first marriage to Wilma Syperda. In 1963, Ted married soulmate Joyce Smelik, and the family gained two more daughters. Ted enriched all six girls’ lives with his love of building things, hiking and camping, and bestowed upon them a lifelong love of literature, music, and the importance of faith. He was so proud that his daughters have remained connected and are friends as well as sisters.

Ted and Joyce lived on Lake Iosco, a small community in Bloomingdale, NJ until 1984, then moved to Woolwich Township. In 2015, they moved to Red Bank, NJ.

Ted dedicated much of his life to civic duties and was committed to public service. He served his communities as a local fire marshal, a state forest ranger, municipal zoning officer and planning board member. He volunteered for a mental health counselling service and was twice a mayoral candidate.

He served his church in many ways, including as an Elder and Clerk of Session. He was president of both the Bloomingdale and Woolwich Boards of Education, and the NJ State Department of Education cited him for 25 years of commitment to local education. In Bloomingdale, he was appointed a special police officer for 12 years and was celebrated for his part in capturing an escaped murderer.

Ted was a life member of both the Republican National Committee and the Radio Club of America, listed in Who’s Who in America, and in 2003, was made a member of the Eisenhower Commission. Ted took great pleasure in entertaining people through music, stories and jokes, and he showed his family love through hard work and the life he built.

Ted is predeceased by his wife, Joyce, his parents, and his brothers George and Robert. He is survived by his sister Nancy Lovell Ridings, and his six daughters, Laurie Candelora, Dorothy Peppard, Valerie Parry, Cynthia Koontz, Karen Lovell, and Barbara Lovell, as well as 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
