Come to Congregation B’nai Tikvah-Beth Israel in Sewell, where Rabbi Jordan Gendra will teach an adult education course open to the public.

The five-session program will begin on Sept. 22 and continue on Oct. 6, Nov. 3, Dec. 1, and Jan. 5. All classes take place from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

The course, “Modern Jewish Thought,” will delve into the origins of the different trends in contemporary Judaism, and will explore the ways Jews integrated themselves in the world during the Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century. It will focus on the themes discussed in the book, An Introduction to Modern Jewish Thinkers: From Spinoza to Soloveitchik by Alan T. Levenson.

Born in Barcelona, Spain, Rabbi Gendra has been leading the Sewell congregation since July 2014. He holds a Ph.D in medieval Jewish history from the Universitat de Girona in Spain and an M.A. in Semitic languages, with a specialization in Hebrew and Aramaic, from the Universitat de Barcelona, and became an ordained rabbi upon his graduation from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia. He has taught at the college level and has led many adult education classes at CBT-BI and elsewhere.

Congregation B’nai Tikvah-Beth Israel, located at 115 East Holly Avenue in Sewell, provides a wide range of religious, educational, and social programs, including an active religious school for children from kindergarten through confirmation. Tuition is free for kindergarten through second grade, and membership is not required to receive free kindergarten tuition. Visitors are always welcome.
