WOOLWICH TWP. — The skies were bright, the runners were ready, and, on June 9, 2018, the Inaugural 08085 Run/Walk/Sit Race went into the record books as a great success.
The top three finishers in both the 5K and the 8K received gift certificates from the Running Company of Mullica Hill. The 5K top finishers were: Female -1. Brooke Vogel, 2. Maddie Priest, 3. Maddie Hicks. Male -1. Colin Morrison, 2. Craig Patterson, 3. Baltazar Castro. The 8K. top finishers were: Female – 1. Shannon Costa, 2. Karen Morrison, 3. Tara Broccoli. Male – 1. Ryan Duffy, 2. Dan Rosa, 3. Brian Herron.
In keeping with the 08085 theme, the 5th place and 8th place finishers in each race were also awarded prizes. 5K 5th place finisher, Nicholas Guidotti, received a free bike tune up from Action Wheels. 5K 8th place finisher, Peter Brandt, received a free pass to an event at the Bridgeport Speedway. 8K. 5th place finisher, Brian Herron, received a free pass to the Bridgeport Speedway, and 8K 8th place finisher Laszlo Szabo, won a free haircut from Kutz 4 Kidz.
The top three male and female finishers in each age group in the Kids’ Race, the5K, and the 8K were awarded custom 08085 baseball caps.
Katherine Wilson was the winner of the 85 hour sign up challenge. She received a gift basket from McCallister Services valued at more than $100.
Proud runners left smiling and requesting a Second Annual 08085 Race. Participants were given a choice of an 8K run or 5K run or walk, 0.8 mile race for children to age 12. The “Sit” option allowed people, who wanted to support a worthy cause, to register, receive a tech shirt, medal, and swag bag, just like the runners.
This year’s participants especially enjoyed the atmosphere created by families and communities coming together. Race Director Joe Musumeci expressed his gratitude to all the volunteers, who gave generously of their time. He is already tweaking improvements for the next race.
Several area businesses supported the race with cash donations, as well as gifts for the swag bags.
Proceeds will be equally divided by the Swedesboro-Woolwich PTO and the Kiwanis Club of Greater Swedesboro. The PTO raises funds to offer the children some opportunities that aren’t included in their school budget.
Co-chairs, Tiffany Mercer, president of Swedesboro-Woolwich PTO, Michelle Van Diehl, Director of Parks and Recreation, and Musumeci, worked with over 80 volunteers to insure that the race was run safely and that everyone had fun.
Kiwanis is a global organization that prides itself on the goal of improving the world, one child and one community at a time. They are in the planning stages of a special project to be announced soon.
