The past and present come alive in Mullica Hill this month

mh merchant webMULLICA HILL — Step back in time for an old fashioned Christmas. Enjoy the holiday season without the madness of the malls or big box stores, starting with Candlelight Shopping on Main Street, on Saturday Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Stroll town and enjoy live music, carolers and open house specials. The town will be lit with 1,000 candles as strollers dressed in period garb greet shoppers. Santa will be here, and at the fire hall 2 to 6 p.m. You can take a picture with Santa, donate a toy, enjoy a dance performance and participate in a bake sale to benefit less fortunate children.

It’s a perfect day to support local businesses and get some Christmas shopping done.

Then on Saturday, Dec. 14 don’t miss the 39th annual Christmas House Tour. Eight homes, an apartment and garden, plus historic buildings are open for the tour from 2 to 7 p.m. Tour the houses at your pace.

A bus will take you from north to south and back again. Two of the houses are off Main Street but worth the very short drive. One of them is the house at Creamy Acres farm built in 1817.

There are also great houses on Main Street including one of the original founders of the house tour. Two of the best houses in town are on the tour. The house at 76 South Main is not to be missed. With tons of history and a breath taking backyard, it is a feast for the eyes. Another great stop is 44 S. Main, another late 1700’s featuring two original fireplaces.

Carolers, Civil War Strollers, entertainment and live music through town will only add to your afternoon. So much to see and hear and two great weekends to start off your holiday season. Tickets for the house tour are $8 in advance and $10 the day of. Tickets may be purchased at Gathering Room Interiors, Blue Plate, Sisters, The Old and New Shop, the Old Mill and Papernut. Stop by Gathering Room Interiors at 41 S. Main St. for a chocolate buffet, hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows by the bonfire. The garden and apartment are on tour. Visit the French Nest in the rear building serving homemade scones, Harney and Sons teas and mulled cider.

There will be special sales at both shops.

On Dec. 7 you’ll find a Christmas Party at Sisters, 39 South Main Street with live music, and sales. On Dec. 14, King’s Row Antiques will have live music and refreshments.
