A group of students from the East Greenwich Elementary School had the opportunity to meet with some of community’s senior citizens in December and share their love of reading. Sixth grader Abigail Glen along with fifth graders Elizabeth DeLoach, Hayden Jones, Lauren Phan, Ashlynne Burke, Sydney Craig, Jenna Sprigman, Jamilynne McCabe, Anna DeJarnette, Felicia McHenry, Ida Smith, Caliegh Kupniewski, Anushree Chauhan, Sofia Abbatiello, Andrew Sheldon, Emma Foley, Michael Rodriguez, Luka Grdinich, Joseph Collins, and Maddy Phun, met with four of our seniors to have lunch and discuss the Newbery Medal book, “The Giver”, by Lois Lowry. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to share their thoughts and insights as well as providing them a way to look at new ideas by expressing their interpretation of the book’s message. This was a positive and fun experience which helped the students not only appreciate the act of reading, but the insight of our community members as well. The next meeting will take place in March.
