John Adams Scholarship Winner Announced

SWEDESBORO — The John J. Adams, Esq. Memorial Scholarship Fund has announced the 2014 winners of the annual scholarship award. They are Aamna Aamir from Kingsway Regional High School in Woolwich Township, and Phoebe Lucas from Newark High School in Newark, Delaware.

Each year a $500 to $1,000 award is given to a student who demonstrates an interest in history, politics, or current events, displays a creative interest in the expressive use of the English language, and engages in charitable endeavors.

Aamir has been an active participant in Mock Trial for four years where according to her professors she has developed her talent for public speaking and witty thinking. Aamir’s classes have included AP and Honors levels courses and she is involved in political concerns both locally and globally.

She is active in her church and uses her talents to work closely with the children and elderly in her church community. She will be attending Seton Hall University in the Fall. The Scholarship was presented to Aamir at graduation.

Phoebe Lucas from Newark High School the artistic director of the “Rude Mechanical Improvisational Comedy Troupe”, an improvisation group of high school students that has raised about $3,000 for charity in the last three years by performing several times a year. Lucas’ interest in politics led her to be the Youth Governor for Youth in Government, and involved in the YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs. She has been active in student government while at Newark High School and has won awards for her political activity as a Young Democrat.

She has a 4.4 GPA, and is ranked eighth out of 342 class members. The President of the Fund presented the award to Lucas at the Senior Awards ceremony at Newark High School on May 28.
