Logan Looking to Expand Food, Employment Programs

by Robert Holt

BRIDGEPORT – At their meeting on Dec. 18, the Logan Township Council discussed the early results of their two new programs designed to help needy township residents.

One of the programs is a food donation program. Council has been working with local businesses and started the food donation program in December.

The second program is the Logan Township Employment Portal, set to go online in early January. This portal is intended to help Logan residents who are seeking employment.

Thirty-four jobs are confirmed to be available when it goes live, while 42 are pending. Residents looking for employment are advised to fill out a contact form on the township website at www.logan-twp.org/jobs.

Logan’s first food care packages were distributed on Dec. 5. “For the number of people who turned out, we could see there was a need,” noted Mayor Frank Minor. “A child going to school with nothing in their stomach is not going to be able to concentrate.”

The next food distribution is scheduled for Jan. 14, with further deliveries to take place the second Monday of every month.

In resolutions, Council authorized the execution of a shared services agreement with Woodstown for solid waste and recycling collection and marketing services. The contract would run from Jan. 1, 2019 to December 31, 2023. Council also approved a first payment of $100,363,06 to American Asphalt Company for the Beckett Road paving project.

Another resolution saw Council accept the Best Practices Inventory Report for 2018.

In the township police report, Lieutenant Joseph Flatley listed 1,152 calls to service for the Logan forces for November, and 160 motor vehicle summonses were written. Flatley also reported that the Logan Police Department had partnered with the Gloucester County Toys For Tots Campaign.

During the public portion of the meeting, Gloucester County EMS Chief Andy Lovell acknowledged the Logan Police for the work they did in a recent heroin bust. The police stopped a tractor trailer on Rt. 295 and uncovered 10 kilograms of heroin.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office said the kilograms were individually packaged and stamped with unique markings. Gloucester County has reported more than 130 overdose deaths in 2018, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Elsewhere, Deputy Mayor Chris Morris offered his thanks to Logan Township’s fire department for driving Santa Claus around town and helping him deliver candy to the children. Morris noted that they volunteered their time to drive Santa Claus, and the Logan Township firefighters were a volunteer organization.

“It’s great presence, and a really nice thing for them to do,” commented Morris.
