MICKLETON — At their meeting on Feb. 11, the East Greenwich Township Committee endorsed the adoption of green building practices for civic, commercial and residential buildings.
According to the new resolution, buildings account for almost 12 percent of potable water use, 65 percent of waste output, and 71 percent of electricity consumption in the U.S. Meanwhile, sustainable building has demonstrated the ability to reduce or eliminate negative aspects of development on the environment and on human health.
East Greenwich has already achieved bronze status with Sustainable Jersey, a non-profit organization that supports community plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions, reduce waste and improve environmental equity.
Sustainable Jersey supplies training, tools and financial incentives to help communities pursue their programs. East Greenwich became Sustainable Jersey certified by submitting documentation showing they had completed a balance of the required sustainability actions, or a minimum of 150 action points. East Greenwich also put together a green team and completed a Sustainable Land Use Pledge and a Natural Resources Inventory of the Township.
East Greenwich received a $10,000 grant from Sustainable Jersey in 2015. The funding went toward the updated NRI. The new NRI contains geology, geography, wetlands, soils, vegetation components and hydrology. Mayor Dale Archer expressed his pride in the Environmental Commission and Green Team.
“The members of this team are volunteer residents that have dedicated their time and efforts to making East Greenwich a greener more sustainable community,” he observed. East Greenwich and our future will be a little greener due to their accomplishments.”
In other resolutions, the Committee granted authorization to open the Redevelopment Zone to be updated by the township engineer. “We updated our Master Plan in 2018,” noted Archer.
Also, the Committee authorized to advertise internally for a Utility Clerk, a Municipal Court Sound Recorder and a Deputy Tax Collector.
In other new business, the committee voted to accept a New Jersey State Fireman’s Association Application for membership from Patrick Boardman Jr.
