WOOLWICH TWP. — In lieu of the usual Swedesboro MLK Day of Homage activities, there will be a food giveaway on MLK Day, Jan. 18, at the Woolwich Township Municipal building lots, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We could not think of a greater way to honor Dr. King during this pandemic, than to give to those who are facing food insecurities,” said Rev. Sherry Lynn Hall, Director of Community Events, HELP, Inc. “COVID 19 has caused many in our area to be in need, who have never struggled before. Nearly 400 children in the Kingsway Regional School District alone receive free and/or reduced lunch, when you add the surrounding area, then you see the numbers of those requiring assistance is quite large. “
The food giveaway is sponsored by HELP, Inc. in partnership with Woolwich Township and several local churches. “We are also asking local businesses and other nonprofit organizations to support our efforts to make the giveaway bags full of nutritious food that can last families for weeks,” said Yusuf Fluellen, Ex. Director, HELP, Inc.
Dr. King was a champion for those in need. Dr. King stated, “Why should there be hunger and deprivation in any land, in any city, at any table, when man has the resources and the scientific know-how to provide all mankind with the basic necessities of life? There is no deficit in human resources. The deficit is in human will.”
The members of HELP are asking like-minded businesses, community groups, and individuals to help them help others. Monetary and food donations are currently being accepted via their website. All donations are tax deductible. For more information on how you can donate and/or volunteer, please visit www.helpinc.org, or on Facebook: MLK Day Celebration.
