SWEDESBORO – Swedesboro Councilmember George Weeks announced at the Borough Council’s virtual meeting on Feb. 16 that the borough has been hit with $5,100 in rejection fees in 2020 resulting from 102 of 107 truckloads of collected recycling being rejected.
As reported before, plastic bags are still the main culprit, causing a lot the truck loads to be rejected and having to be separated manually.
In other news, Councilmember Joanna Gahrs reported on some upcoming family fun events heading to town including an Egg Hunt, and Spring Fling.
Gahrs stated that in conjunction with Fellowship Bible Church, there will be an Easter egg hunt at Locke Ave Park on March 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The rain date would be the following day from 2 to 4 p.m. if necessary.
Gahrs also went on to confirm that there will be a Spring Fling Festival in May as well. This event will feature bands, food, carnival games and even a firework display later in the evening. “Due to COVID-19,” she continued. “There will be no rides this year.”
The date for this outing is scheduled for May 22 from 4 to 9 p.m., with a rain date planned for the following day.
During the meeting, a moment of silence was held for the passing of local resident Wendy Beckett who was active in several community groups and events. She was involved in planning the annual Christmas Parade, was vice president of the Greater Swedesboro Business Association, served 18 years as a crossing guard, and headed The Kings Things Food Drive.
In public works, Swedesboro Mayor Tom Fromm praised the department for doing such a “fantastic job” on fixing a sewer leak at Second and Church as well as a blown out electrical box on Broad Street.
Councilmember Sam Casella stated that the snowflake decorations on the streetlamps along Kings Highway will be coming down at the beginning of March. The lights currently not working are also being addressed.
