Salem Medical Center’s Sleepiest Service

Have you been told you snore?

Are you often tired or fatigued during the day?

Do you periodically stop breathing while asleep?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may benefit from a sleep study at SMC’s Sleep Center.

“About one in five adults have symptoms of sleep apnea — nearly 40 million people — but most cases go undiagnosed,” said Director, Cardiopulmonary and Neurodiagnostic Services John Roselli, RRT. “The best way to determine if a patient has sleep apnea is to study them while they sleep.”

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep.

“People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during sleep, sometimes hundreds of times,” Roselli said. “This means the brain — and the rest of the body — may not get enough oxygen.”

The Center offers sleep studies for adults and children in a comfortable, home-like atmosphere. Between 20 and 25 sleep studies are performed per month both in-house and through home study.

For an unattended or home sleep study, the patient is given the monitoring equipment and instructions on its use. The information collected is then read and scored.

“During a study here at SMC, Persante Sleep Care techs monitor the patient’s brain waves, oxygen levels, heart rate and breathing, as well as eye and leg movement during sleep,” Roselli said. “Everything is recorded during the study for further review and diagnosis.”

Those aged 50 to 60 who are overweight or chronic snorers are most at risk for sleep apnea.
