SWEDESBORO –Trinity Episcopal “Old Swedes” Church will be holding their Annual Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) Pancake Supper at the Church Parish House at 1202 Kings Highway on Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Tickets can be obtained by calling the parish office at 467-1227 or via email: trinityoldswedes@comcast.net or at our regular 9 a.m. worship services. Price is $8 for adults or $4 for children 12 years and under.
They will have pancakes, Haines sausage, sausage gravy, fried potatoes, coffee/tea, juice, dessert, and beads.
A centuries old tradition in the Christian church is to empty homes and churches of all the holiday sweets and rich foods on the day before Ash Wednesday. Kitchens were “shriven” of all that might tempt the faithful to stray from their Lenten disciplines. These rich foods were cooked up into cakes and finished off in banquets on Shrove Tuesday.
Trinity offers an Ash Wednesday service at 12 noon on Feb. 10. Please join them as they begin the season of Lent and reflect upon one’s life during the previous year.
Ashes are often considered to be a symbol of man’s mortality and represent an attitude of humility, sorrow, and repentance (Genesis 18:27). The ashes used in the Ash Wednesday ritual come from burning the palm branches used to celebrate Palm Sunday of the previous year.
After being blessed with holy water, the ashes sit amidst burning incense to take on a pleasing scent.
