WOODBURY — Director Frank J. DiMarco and Commissioner Jim Jefferson are pleased to announce additional dates to the FREE Flu Shot Program. New dates have been added for 2022 and the program will now be extended into 2023.
The flu is a contagious disease that spreads around the United States every year, usually between October and May. Anyone can get the flu, but it’s more dangerous for some people. Infants and young children, people 65 years old and over, women who are pregnant, and people with certain health conditions or a weaker immune system are at the greatest risk for flu complications.
“One of the easiest and best ways to stay flu free this year is to get your flu shot. The Health Department has scheduled additional flu clinics to continue to reach residents across the county,” said Director Frank J. DiMarco. “Every resident who gets immunized against the flu will ultimately cut down the strain on our hospital emergency rooms, employers, schools and other public health agencies during flu season.”
The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated every flu season; Children 6 months through 8 years of age may need 2 doses during a single flu season. Everyone else needs 1 dose every flu season. It takes about 2 weeks for protection to develop after vaccination.
There are many flu viruses, and they are always changing. Each year, a new flu vaccine is formulated to protect against the influenza believed to be likely to cause death in the upcoming flu season.
“Flu shots are a vital tool in keeping our residents and our community healthy,” said Jim Jefferson, County Commissioner and liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services. “Even if you are not in a high-risk group, getting a flu shot can help protect a loved one, that is.”
