Eleanor Race, a sophomore at Clearview Regional High School in Mullica Hill, was recently selected by the New Jersey Association for Jazz Education (NJAJE) into the All State Jazz Band on bass. By scoring the top score in the state during a blind audition, Eleanor secured the only bass part in the New Jersey All State Jazz Band. Eleanor is the first Clearview student in 19 years to be selected for the All State Jazz Band, and is also the first member of the rhythm section to be selected from Clearview.
NJAJE holds three regional auditions every year for entry into the regional jazz ensembles. Students are required to perform several jazz scales and styles, as well as a solo piece, an improvisation section, and sight reading at the audition. Only students who are accepted into their regional jazz ensemble are eligible to audition for the All State Jazz Band. Performances for the All State Jazz Band will be in the fall at the NJEA teachers’ convention in Atlantic City, as well as at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.
