As the winter season nears its end, for the student athletes here at Kingsway it means their beloved sports, passionate journey, and beautiful memories nears its conclusion. The large athletic department here at Kingsway holds a variety of winter opportunities for its students, including bowling, swimming, basketball, wrestling, and more.
Our school teams are extremely hardworking, energetic, and talented for the wrestling season. While wrestling is an individual sport, the wrestling teams do a great job maintaining their teamwork aspect.
Veronica Rojas, a girls’ wrestling team member and receiver of the Coaches Choice Award for leadership and dedication to the sport, describes this bond as her favorite thing about the sport. From support from teammates to coaches, including the main coach, Michael Mulligan, wrestling has motivated her to put 100 percent into all aspects of her life. So far, the girl’s record is 5-3.
Kingsway basketball teams have been persistent and resilient throughout this season as well. Dylan Lewis, a senior member of the boys’ basketball team, details the reason he loves basketball. Being able to hold on to his childhood bond with basketball and inspire others, Dylan believes in the philosophy that delusion is necessary to remain dedicated, and dedication to a sport comes from the heart.
The boys have had 16 straight wins, were Tri-County Conference Champions back to back, and are proud of the program they’ve built here at Kingsway.
Coach of the girls’ basketball team, Coach Jeanine Delaney, started as a ballerina in her youth, later transitioning into basketball. This has helped her maintain connections and family relationships within her family as well.
The girls’ basketball team, despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, including illnesses, injuries, and tough losses, continues to bounce back. Coach Delaney believes in showing up every day, resilient and ready, and she believes in the chemistry and culture of her girls.
Senior on Kingsway’s bowling team, Skylar Grabarski, reminisces on her experiences bowling here at Kingsway. She loves bowling for its individual and team characteristics.
Their secret to many wins? Skylar believes it is their understanding as a team because each teammate sets a goal for themselves, helping create a supportive and encouraging environment. When one bowler may not be at 100 percent, other teammates help compensate for them to promote an empathetic team dynamic.
