WOOLWICH TWP. – On May 14, a bus transporting Logan Township Elementary School students was involved in a bus and truck accident at the intersection of Paulsboro and Stone Meeting House Road.
The accident resulted in a broken telephone. Roads in both directions were closed to traffic until the pole was replaced.
Logan Elementary School did not respond to requests for information on the bus accident.
Then on May 15 at approximately 7:24 a.m., a Kingsway Regional School District bus (K-45), transporting about 30 students, was involved in an accident at the intersection of Kings Highway and Glen Echo Avenue in Swedesboro.
According to Dr. James J. Lavender, Superintendent of Schools, as the bus traveled north on Kings Highway, a truck traveling south made a sudden left turn onto Glen Echo Avenue as the light turned yellow. In an effort to avoid a direct collision, the bus driver steered slightly right. However, the truck struck the bus’s front driver-side wheel, causing the bus to hit a traffic light pole, which then fell onto the bus.
“Thankfully, no students or staff were injured. The bus driver immediately checked on all students and reported the incident to our transportation office. Police and district administrators responded quickly to the scene,” stated Lavender.
Students were safely transferred to another bus and transported to school by 8:07 a.m., where they were met by nurses for wellness checks. “Our school counselors were also on hand and provided support to those students who witnessed the accident and were understandably upset by the experience.,” he added.
While the accident remains under investigation, Lavender said he is not in a position to disclose the cause at this time. “I do want to commend our driver for her quick thinking, which helped prevent a potentially more serious outcome.”
